Wind noise?

I had my windshield replaced a couple of months ago due to something that caused some spider-webbing. However, now I notice that once I get up to about 45 mph, I get noticeable wind noise. It's nothing loud and the radio usually covers the sound and it's not something that affects normal conversation in the vehicle, but it seems that there's more wind noise than I remember having before the replacement.

The noise actually doesn't increase much, if any, when out on the highway at 70 or 75, but I'm thinking that the Ridge was a pretty quiet vehicle with the original windshield. I'm wondering if I need to call the guys back out and have them redo the molding.

XD,

Using blue painters tape, try taping the body line between the third break valance and the roof. A lot of members have reported that thgis area was the source of the type of wind noise that you are reporting.

Re: Wind noise?

Forgive me, but I'm not familiar with the terms you are using. What is the "break valance"?

I may be able to figure it out once I get out to the car on the way home, but it's puzzling me at the moment.

He!!, I made that clear as mud didn't I

The valance I refered to is where the third break light is (Right above the rear window). Tape up the the groove or body line between the valance and the roof and see if the windnoise is gone when you are driving at 45mph or higher.

xd9x19

picture - worth a thousand words.

I found the source of my wind whistle noise this way. Very loud at times and annoying BTW.
You can also put a strip of tape over half of the windshied moulding and onto the sheet metal (cover the seam) to eliminate that area.

I covered every seam on the RL until the noise stopped then removed a section at a time untill the noise re-appeared and walah, it was the area that MikeT suggests.

Good luck.

Re: Wind noise?

Ok....I'll give it a try. However, I can definitely tell that the noise is coming from the front windshield, not from the rear. I may tape off the molding like you suggest and do the process of elimination also.

If taping the break valance proves to be less than fruitful; try taping the around the windshield moulding. If the noise disappears then, remove the tape in sections and this will allow you to pinpoint the area causing the trouble.

Re: Wind noise?

I had the exact same problem when I had my windhsield replaced. I took it back to the shop, and they said that the moulding kit that came with the replacement was a trouble area for them. In fact, they said that 2 out of 3 come back for noise issues. They tweaked things a bit and it is quieter now, but still quite noticeable, getting louder as the vehicle goes faster. I'll live with until the next replacement, and see if they can get a factory kit from Honda, maybe that will work better.

BTW, around here, the highway folks spread 1/4" minus gravel instead of salt due to the temps. It works pretty well, but it is tough on windshields! Tires tend to pick up the gravel, then spit it out when they get up to speed, and it seems like windhields are magnets for the gravel!

When you guys say wind noise, do you mean a whistling sound or a wind rushing sound like when you open a window slightly?
I'm asking because over the x-mas holidays I drove the RL about 200 Kms on the highway @ ~110 Km/h with the radio off. (Was driving with Mom & Dad who have different taste of music) During the quite times I could here wind noise like a rush of air. Never noticed it before, but then again, never drove that long without the radio.
On the return 200 Kms on x-mas day, we found some carols that everyone agreed would be ok. Didn’t hear the wind noise!

Re: Wind noise?

No whistling sound on mine. Just general low-tone wind noise like a window was slightly cracked. I don't hear it when the radio is on and it's really not all that much when the radio is off, but it's more than what I get when driving either of my other two vehicles, so I don't think it's normal.
