RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

In my quest in trying to understand Honda's reasoning for choosing a name like "Ridgeline", I researched a few of the other auto mfr's truck names in an attempt to reach a logical conclusion.

I came across this definition of "Ridgeline" today:

Ridgeline: This is the peak of a roof; the point of meeting of the upper slopes of a roof - see photo.

Now, let's study this situation for a second. The most advanced pick-up truck (in my opinion) in the world right now and they (Honda) chose a name like "Ridgeline"? People ask me, "Ridgeline?.....what the hell is that?"

Let us look at some American truck names in comparison to ours:

Explorer: A nice bold truck name showing no cowardness in searching out new worlds and civilizations. To boldly go where no truck has gone.....alright,alright I'll stop. If I close my eyes, I could see Christopher Columbus right now.....

Durango: Sounds a bit Aussie-like to me. So-so on this one...

Bronco: A wild mustang (horse) that refuses to be tamed. Kudos to OJ on proving that theory.

Tahoe: Sounds very rugged to me and capable of hill climbing and kicking butt.

Sierra: Now there's a rugged pick-up name. The only hitch is that you've gotta be a cowboy with a killer tan smokin' a Marlboro to drive one.I'll dig up my cowboy boots and fedora.

Expedition: Sir Edmund Hillary.....Mt.Everest....ring a bell?

Dakota: See Sierra

Navigator: In my opinion, the overall best in a truck's name. Spells out in plain english, "I'm the leader, follow me". "I will truly navigate you to safe waters and protect you from all evil". Also, the guy sitting next to the pilot in your last flight to O'Hare who aced math & physics....thank god.

Denali: Picture yourself on an african jungle expedition escaping harm from crocodiles, snakes and lions...only because you're driving a "Denali"..

Ram: "Don't piss me off otherwise I'll ram you" Then again, came across something on the internet likening the Dodge Ram logo to a woman's reproductive innards.....now that really turned me off.

Savana: "Georgia....oh, Georgiaaaaa" Ray was definitely "the" man.

Safari: Self explanatory and similar to "Denali" (Although a member DID point out to me where Denali actually is...sorry to all Alaskans for confusing you with the african jungles.....).

Can the japanese do better? Let's take a look:

Tundra: I'm visualizing Alaska during their short summer and the extremely rugged terrain my truck has to cross. "My truck is a Tundra" Wow, sounds tough to me! "Hey look at that polar bear eating a penguin....."

Frontier: Again, the western cowboy thing. Think rugged!

Titan: "Hey Sparticus, throw me over a few of those spears!" Exhibits ruthlessness and will not take prisoners.

Tacoma: Reminds me a bit of Tahoe but still manly and tough.

Pilot: Almost as good as navigator. See, Honda was on the right track on this one so what happened?

B2000: Even this name sounds more rugged than "Ridgeline".

Quest: Searching for....leading the pack to discover...the vikings.

What about the Koreans?:

Tucson/Santa Fe: New Mexico, here we come. Visual indications of Thelma & Louise riding their convertible off a cliff...

Sorento: Driving thru the italian vineyards smalling the sweet grapes...ahh Calabria!!!

In closing, for my birthday, I would like a top Honda official to come forward and truthfully explain to me why my truck is a roofer's slang. Why do people like the looks of my truck but have a problem pronouncing it's name? When I tell my friends that I got a Ridgeline, I don't want them suggesting to me that I visit a doctor to take care of it.

In short, what was going on when they decided on the name "Ridgeline"? Come'on guys.....WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

**Note: There were no animals hurt or killed during my research. Any resemblance to any other truck is purely coincidental......Avalanche NOT!

Re: RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

I think Ridgeline is a pretty good name. I have no problems with it. In addition to being the top of a roof, you could probably take a look at the Ridgeline logo to figure out the other defiinition... probably the more common definition - a ridgeline is a series of hilltops or mountains. A Ridgeline is similar to a mountain range but on a smaller scale. I think you could lump the name Ridgeline right in there with Sierra (name of a mountain range in California), Denali (name of a National Park in Alaska - Home of Mt. McKinley), or Tacoma (the original name the Native Americans game to Mt. Rainier).

Re: RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

GREAT post Andy. LOLOLOL
Much thought went into this and thank you for taking the time. Very entertaining. I love it.

So.....I wasn't crazy about the name hen I heard it either. I liked the "Concept" as a name better. The Honda Concept.

But I'm use to it and it's all good.

BTW...Happy Birthday if it's today or soon.

LOL
I thought the name was the worst thing of the truck. Come to think of it, it's really the only thing I'm not wild about.

Re: RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

Thanks guys! I figured that a little humour may do some people on this list some good.

I had left out a few like, "Ridged" and "Lined" for obvious reasons as some of the male members on this forum probably know what I'm talking about.....

Re: RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

Perhaps, if they used the "Ridgeline" symbol over the word Ridgeline (like the ROC logo) on our tailgates it would be more obvious.

I like the name.

Great idea, Joe! I'd put one over my tailgate tag! I've been asked the significance of the term "Ridgeline" on a few occasions, so this could be a practical "accessory".
It'd be nice to find a custom tag (raised like "Ridgeline" on the tailgate), and just stick it above.

Now... who do we know that does graphics? Hmmmmm.....

Re: RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

I suppose you could tell people it's the name of your Italian girlfriend. You know, pronounced something like Rrrid-jA-leen!

Heh-heh! Good one! I actually had an Italian GF in college named Angelina!

Friends have offered the explanation that it was named Ridgeline because of the "ridges" along the sides...

Re: RIDGELINE (Definition of:)

More people have been interested in my trucks unique look and features instead of its unique name! LOL
