Whistle noise... I found another cause

Ever since I had my RL, I always heard a faint whistle noise and felt I will just live with it. I never wanted to say I had this noise because of the issues many had with the windshield and upper third break light plastic. I thought what is all the fuss about, it's not that bad.... I finally found out what was causing the whistling noise......

It happens when playing a CD. It took me over a year to figure this out. Out of habit, I like to listen to the radio for news and only use the CD for the highway trips. So every time I was on the highway I would hear the whistling. The whistling would get louder as I was at highway speeds because I would turn up the volume to muddle out the road noise. The whistling would become more faint and would disappear as I slowed down, because I would turn down the volume as I went slower. This past weekend as my wife was in the car, she said I needed to get some new CD's, so I shut it off as my rebuttal... and the whistling stopped . Once I got home I tested out the CD player and found out the whistling occurs only when I play CD’s. The type of CD does not matter.

I thought I was going crazy because not everyone I have had listen can hear the whistling. Anyone else discover they have a high pitch whistle type noise from their RTS oem CD player? Or is it just a select few of us with the ability to hear at higher frequencies?

Do you think that the cause of this could be a subwoofer +- setting?

Re: Whistle noise... I found another cause

I get a whistling noise at times, but I don't play CDs. I'm aware of the other possible causes, but haven't taken the time to narrow it down yet. I'm like you - I seem to hear certain frequencies that others don't pick up. Maybe we do have dog ears

I'll have to check it out and let you know...

My ears are very sensitive. I never go beyond 10 with a CD or 14 with the radio at highway speeds.

Question Re: Whistle noise... I found another cause

Well I tested out the system today to see if it was any one of the speakers or subwoofer causing the issue. I can tell you that it’s not coming form any one particular speaker, and never occurs with just the radio playing. From what I can tell by my research, the whistle noise is either electronic feedback from the CD player's motor and/or the CD laser design; which is prone to generating something called optical feedback noise... I guess it will just go away as I get older and loose the ability to hear the higher frequencies.

I notice I'm gradually losing my ability to hear higher freq's as I get older and know that is normal.

But, OMG, I think my eyes are gone!

I can't read this post without a magnifying glass.... ...

Re: Whistle noise... I found another cause

Sorry for reviving the thread, but I have a whistling noise and I don't think it is the CD player. I hear that and I can live with it. What bothers me is all of the damn noises I have (dash, doors, seats) in addition to a whistling noise I heard from the windshield in the upper right area. I pressed on the seals, and other areas and it only was there around 60MPH. I drove home on the freeway and didn't hear the noise. I didn't have a CD going, on FM radio.

I REALLY wish my Ridgeline rode more quietly. It rattles and squeaks more then my old S-10 EVER did.
