Honda Black Box??

Found this on the web this morning:

http://gizmodo.com/351477/drive-reco...-car-black-box

"Honda's Drive Recorder will detect impacts and save information for the 12 seconds before and 8 seconds afterwards, aircraft black-box-style: forward-view imagery, along with sound and data on speed and deceleration rates all get stored on an SD card in its main unit, ready to be uploaded to a PC...."

I don't know if this is a real option or aftermarket accessory in Japan, or if they celebrate April Fool's on February 1st. But it IS a cool idea

Like it or not, that information is already stored on the main PCM, and is retrievable should you be in a disabling crash. Of course you must have Honda's diagnostic equipment. The information has already to be used to prosecute drivers following a serious crash that was their fault when they denied it.

Re: Honda Black Box??

its true for GM and Ford, dont see why not Honda. I think its pretty much standard practice these days. The question before the courts is who owns the data, the auto manu or the auto purchaser. Seems like there was a case where Toyota was made to supply the data to an owner.

Re: Honda Black Box??

Not a lie, and also not new. I had an accident in 98 in my Tacoma and they pulled the pigs brain for verification of speed at time of airbag deployment. Not sure if it was a sliding window, but they got it somehow.

Re: Honda Black Box??

General Motors started "black boxing" crash data on airbag-equipped 1973 Impalas sold as government fleet vehicles. However, the 1973 Oldsmobile Toronado with the optional airbag marked the beginning of recording deployment data on a model available to the general public. With today's technology and the wide array of multiplexed sensors installed on vehicles, just about everything short of an audio/visual capture of the actual event can and is recorded.

The primary purpose of recording this information is so engineers can analyze real-world crash data in an effort to further improve driver safety. As far as I know, the data cannot legally be used as evidence at the present time. However, it makes great supporting evidence when a driver says he was "only going 35 MPH" when the vehicle was obviously smooshed up like an accordian and the black box recorded an 80ms deceleration from 100-0!
