Re: Any RL - Owning Hams doing HF or VHF/UHF from their RL?
I haven't had the spirit to make the NMO plunge yet. It's a new truck thing. I have pondered the possibilites of fabricating a mount that uses the cargo tie-down bolts. No work done so far. I have a IC-706 just begging to be hidden in the cargo area between the seats. One of these days I'll be QRV.

Ultra-HOG's antenna install/location is pretty slick. I always liked mounting a 19" whip in that location on my sedans. JUST the thing to avoid an unscheduled stop by the local gendarmes, especially on a solid color Caprice or Crown Vic. ("Is he one of US? Maybe he's a Fed!") Alas, the local lads all drive Tahoes here in Hooterville(1)... W7LV (1) HOOTERVILLE: Henderson, NV TOONTOWN: Las Vegas, NV UPPER CARJACKISTAN: North Las Vegas, NV |

(I did homebrew a 10M 3-element Quad many years ago out of 1/2 inch PVC. Best antenna I've ever had on that band) Now I am stuck in an antenna hostile development and forced to use my mobile tuner under the deck with a random length, tree born, stealth dipole.

Re: Any RL - Owning Hams doing HF or VHF/UHF from their RL?
Well....from my wife's previous post...I guess I am the old fart. I have been thinking about mounting an Icom IC-208H under the passenger front seat. I am Looking for a good place to mount the face plate and antenna. I too have thought about some type of mount using the front tie downs. I would sure like to see any mounting ideas you guys come up with. Steve-KI4IVW....and I do let my wife drive the Ridgeline every once in a while!...73's

Re: Any RL - Owning Hams doing HF or VHF/UHF from their RL?
Nothing installed yet in my 1 week new RTL - but I'm thinking real hard. Perhaps over the Christmas holiday I'll have some time to get my 2 meter rig installed. I'll be interested to hear if any of you have encountered any type of interference between Ridgeline electronics and radio gear. I hate those leaky electrons

Re: Any RL - Owning Hams doing HF or VHF/UHF from their RL?
I'm also looking for a place for the radio and antenna install.
I'm looking at getting a yaesu ft8900r and I see that Diamond now makes a quad band mobile antenna that looks halfway decent so I may try to mount it to the right front tie down in the bed. I'm just not sure how I'm going to run the cable into the truck yet. Any suggestions??? 73, KE4OSL |

Re: Any RL - Owning Hams doing HF or VHF/UHF from their RL?
I've had a Vertex FT7800 in our Ridge for about two months with good results.
Thus far, there has been virtually no negative interactions between the rig and the vehicle electronics, and the DC power (direct to battery) seems clean and quiet. DC power in the cab is relay-switched and distributed via a small West Mountain RigRunner. I also have a trunking scanner (mounted between the console and the dash) and the audio is also clean and clear. The FT7800 control head is mounted in the empty slot below the radio head unit; the radio it self is mounted under the drivers seat, wedged between the floor and the optional XM radio receiver. Two small external speakers are mounted high on the drivers side A pillar. After studying the RidgeLine for quite a while, the best routing I could find for the externally-mounted antennas was to remove the bed bulkhead (below the rear window) and drill through the rear cab wall, just above one of the one-way ventilation ports . The coax enters via a snug grommet and is run under the carpet to the radios. Everything seems tight and dry so far. |
