Hacking the OEM radio for Sirius. Questions

Hi Gang,

Finally bought my RL RTL, no sunroof, no nav. Got a good price 28k + tax. Too good to pass up. Anyway, I have following this site since its inception and wondered about using the OEM unit for Sirius radio.

The OEM unit is manufactured by Pioneer. Part Link

Pioneer now has a Sirius unit made for them, SIR-PNR1, I think by Alpine. (Have a similar setup in my old BMW with a Alpine HU.)

Has anyone taken any pics of the rear side of their radio? I wonder if these OEM units use the I-bus technology that Pioneeer usess in their other products. If the technology for the sat units is similar, why couldn't one just plug in the Sirius unit?

If someone has their HU from a RTL available, please post a pic of the rear side. TIA Harry

PS, the color is Black.

If you do a search - I posted a pic up here of the back of my RTS unit (same backend as RTL w/o navi).

...and no, the plugs on the vehicle are common with Honda, they are not Pioneer OEM unfortunately.

Re: Hacking the OEM radio for Sirius. Questions

The stereo and XM tuner use Honda's proprietary bus for communication. To interface Sirius you'd have to find a Sirius tuner that used the Honda bus. Probably isn't going to happen.

Give it some time. Blitzsafe makes an XM direct connect module for BMW to use the car's existing equipment and and display all the information for XM on a radio programmed for Sirius. I had it on my M3 and it worked beautifully.
