Angry GPS Database Grossly Incomplete

I made my first long trip this past weekend and found the database to be the poorest I have ever seen and I have been using a GPS for many years and many manufacturers. If I wanted Yugo quality I would have bought a Yugo.

For me to drive down I-5 through Central California and not one gas station or restaurant along the freeway was in the database. I was not paying attention and got my gas level to E with the light on before I noticed it. I used the GPS to find the nearest gas station and all it could find was ones 7+ miles off the freeway. Being concerned I decide to go off freeway the 7 miles to get gas only to find a gas station right there at the ramp. The employee working behind the counter informed me that they had been there 33 years.

On my way back I turned on all icons and kept searching for gas stations along my route only to find none at any exit between Bakersfield and Stockton. If it can't find a gas station along one of the major freeways in the US, what can you rely it to find and find accurately. I stayed at Circus Circus in Las Vegas and the GPS had it on the opposite side of the strip in a vacant field. I have been going to Las Vegas off and on for over 25 years and Circus Circus has not moved since then.

I will be calling my dealer in the morning to report that my GPS is defective. If they tell me that this is how it is suppose to be, I think it will be time to start legal actions (class action).

The map data is provided by NavTeq. The business information is provided by another company. Expect a very short conversation at your dealership.

I bought it from Honda and it is their responsibility to ensure the quality. In this case, Honda has failed miserably if they are willing to except this poorest of poor quality. My cheap handheld Garmin has a much better database then my Ridgeline.

Re: GPS Database Grossely Incomplete

I have seen similar issues. I sold a 2004 Acura MDX with navigation to buy my Ridgeline, and it's database was much more complete than the Ridgelines. Both units are made by Alpine and the MDX's DVD was from 2003. I have tried entering in several POIs that were available on the MDX and not found on the Ridgeline.

This is very frustrating for me.

I would expect a new database to have more Points, not less. I hope that Honda/Alpine can fix this with a DVD update, along with providing the Trip Computer functionality that I had in the MDX as well.

Does yours work along I-5? Mine works in other areas and cities but for my trip to Vegas it was VERY incomplete. This is not an opinion, it is a fact.

Re: GPS Database Grossely Incomplete

I don't think there is any guarantee written anywhere that every business you happen to pass will be listed, no matter how well established they happen to be. There is a commercial aspect to this as well. I don't know if companies are being asked if they are willing to pay to be listed, but it seems that they have to be registered with at least one major business intelligence company. Frustrating as it may be, I don't think you'll get far, having looked at page 7 of the Navigation booklet. "The Licensors do not guarantee to the customer that the functions included in the DVD meet the specific objectives of the user."

If you had traded your 2004 for a 2006 MDX you would have the same complaint as it uses exactly the same Navigation DVD as the Ridgeline.

Re: GPS Database Grossely Incomplete

I do understand that businesses open and close but to be lacking all businesses along a MAJOR freeway is very wrong. PDXBlueRidge confirms that Honda has left out parts of the database compared to the MDX.

That doesn't make it any better. I would still like an explanation on why the lack of POIs between the different versions/years. I would rather run my older MDX DVD as long as I didn't loose any other features, than to have the lack of Points Of Interests.
