Re: $1.87 Rivet nut tool for step/running boards.
Thanks Mike...used the tool to install OEM running boards today and it worked fine....just a couple of things to remember:
Bring the rivet to the hardware store to make sure the threads are the same size Don't be surprised that the rivet goes (almost) completely in the hole...I didn't know how it would work, but found out during the process Good advice..use a long wrench for leverage...you'll need it I'll let you know how my trailer hitch goes...next weekend John Skyhawk474 ![]() |

Mike -- You created this thread almost 3 years ago and it still lives!
I followed your instructions to a T and was able to install my OEM running boards in just a few hours. Thanks for a great post!! |

Re: $1.87 Rivet nut tool for step/running boards.
I was all prepared to use Mike's rivet nut installation method for installing my OEM running boards. I went to Home Depot and purchased all necessary items, but...
...then I read mugen1's post from 2005 (Solved the running board insert problem!) about threading a bolt through the oval hole out the "rivet nut" hole from behind and using a locking washer and nut to secure. I did make a couple of modifications so the bolt wouldn't turn when I tightened the nut. Before I threaded the bolt throught the hole, I used one of those rubber backed washers turned upside down so the rubber part was touching the head of the bolt. Then once it was threaded through I used a locking washer, followed by a standard nut, followed by a stop nut (the nut with the nylon stopper built in) which should lock things in place. It worked great! ![]()
