Trunk Cooler Question

Has anybody found a clever way of extending the back wall of the trunk (wall closest to spare tire) to increase the volume of the built-in cooler? I was thinking some kind of water tight pop in panel that is removable ofcourse to allow access to the spare tire. I've seen threads about trunk liners and dividers but nothing about this. Just wondering if anybody has done it or has any ideas.

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

Interesting idea. You might have to angle the ends towards the tailgate for hinge movement... but should be possible. Hmm... I will be discussing this amongst myself for awhile...

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

I thought about fabricating something out of fiber glass but the trunk will hold a 72 quart cooler. The supplies to build something like a fiberglass lip would cost more than the cooler does at Wally World. You would have to line the entire trunk as it is not insulated.

Ice goes pretty fast in the summertime.

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

Wouldn't the rear suspension movement range be comprimised by extending rear trunk wall (At its current depth)?

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

Seeing that he still wants access to the spare tire via a pop in panel, I assumed he was talking about basically extending upward the rear wall of the lower truck, to cover the spare tire area, for more "top loading" of that main trunk space.

However, I could be wrong... It's happened before... once. Ok, twice.

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

Yep, we're all on the same page - now just need ideas. I've never fiberglassed before so I was considering something with sheet metal. Problem is there are no sharp angles making fab much more time consuming. Then there's waterproofing and figuring out the best way to fasten it in. To be honest I haven't paid much attention to the trunk - what is it made out of? Is it a molded plastic or sheetmetal? Hopefully this weekend I will have some time to have a few beers and stare at the trunk (yes - I know how pathetic that sounded) and maybe come up with some more concrete ideas.

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

Hrmm, I really like this idea. Something you could easily put in/take out is ideal...

Will be watching this thread closely.

Re: Trunk Cooler Question

I guess you could take foam board and use construction adhesive and insulate it from the outside by gluing the boards as an idea, though probably not the prettiest solution.
