Karmann Ghia

Anyone remember the VW Karmann Ghia?
We thought of it as the poor man's Porsche. Actually had some Porshe parts.
Made from '55 t0 '75 I think?
Want one baddddd...

Re: Karmann Ghia

In 1963, a friend of mine's mother bought a red convertible. It was setting in the garage with 11 miles on it (as I remember). (Can you see where this is going) I was in the passenger's seat smelling the new and playing with the knobs. (we were 14) He (Mikey) turned the key to play the radio when he turned the key too far, the car was in first (geared really low), it started. He must have had it foot on the accelerator because it leaped into action, went about 8 feet before it hit the garage wall, cause lots of damage to the car and the garage. This was in the summer. Eventhough he lived about a block away, I think I saw him again about the time school started. We were never allowed near the car again.

Very Nice! I could look over the windshield and would probably have to drive with goggles on! I would look like one of those clowns on the miniature motorcycles. Oh man, sorry for the visual!

Honestly, VW never made a good looking vehicle until 2003/2004 with the Jetta and Passat.

Re: Karmann Ghia

Remember it well, back in the '60's the community bought our local doctor a Karmann Ghia in appreciation of all the good work and health he brought to all of us. The funny part was, since he was a 24 hour on call country doctor, the cops pulled up beside him at a stop light one night and he was asleep at the wheel with his foot on the clutch. Need some more like him. Dr. Reynolds Fite MD, may he rest in peace!!

You must be young...The GTI's of the 70's and 80's were hot! And what about the Scirroco (sp).

Just to add, and I don't want to Hijack this thread, but did anyone go see
"Get Smart"? The Karmann Ghia as well as the other two cars he drove in each season was part of the film for brief periods. Excellent movie by the way....

Re: Karmann Ghia

The Karmann Ghia was a very cool car. Back in its day, it was such a nice ride. If you compare it to today's autos, it doesn't look like much, and the power wouldn't win you any prizes at the drag strip, but it was sure cool to ride around in. Especially the convertible. Compare it to the autos in its day...not today's autos. Anyway, it was way cooler than the Microbus.
