Parking brake problem in cold weather

Not really a problem but needed to share. I was at Big Bear Mountain last weekend. It was probably about 20 degrees outside in the morning. I had to re-park the car so we could load up our snowboard gear. I pressed on the parking brake but the parking brake pedal kept going back up! I was like WTF?? Kept trying and trying to use parking brake but it wouldn't stay down and engage. Then I noticed that the lever that you pull to release the parking brake wasn't returning (going in all the way) like it normally does. So I pushed it back in and the parking brake finally engaged. I'm thinking it was the cold weather..but who knows. The next morning, it wasn't nearly as cold and the parking brake worked normal. Back in SoCal, no issues with it since that one morning. Anyway, not sure if its anything I should be worried about but I thought I'd let you guys know.

Re: Parking brake problem in cold weather

Thanks for the heads up. I will watch out for that.

We have had over 20 below zero F the last two winters and I haven't had the parking brake problem you describe. What I do get is that the passenger door is really hard to close. I have to slam it several times before the latch will engage. When the temperature is above 10 below zero F there is no problem.

Re: Parking brake problem in cold weather

I haven't had either of those issues. My thought, even before I finished reading your thread, was that it was related to the cold temps. I have had the reverse problem on other vehicles. The parking brake can freeze after it is set. Pull the release and the foot pedal pops but the brakes keep holding.
