Michelin LTX tires replaced at 24,000 miles

Much to my surprise, I had to take my Ridgeline into a Michelin Tire dealer
today. All four tires were less than 2 years old with 24,000 miles on them
and all four tires had 'CRACKS" between the threads. It looked like they were dry rotting.
This is the OEM and top of the line tire for Michelin. They told the dealer to replace all four tires with new ones at an adjusted price of $48.74 each.
They retail @ $194.99 each.
My neighbor was the one who brought this to my attention. He has a 2006 Pilot and a Chevy Truck.

You might want to check your tires for cracks between the treads. No problems on the sides at all. The tires had been no problems at all with Ride, Handling, etc.

I check the air pressure every month, but the tires appeared to be new with lots of tread, really didnot look close between the treads.

I was washing my RL the other day and when I was cleaning the wheels I noticed the side walls of my Michelins all had tons of cracks.

I know my truck sat on the dealer lot for 16-18 months before I bought it(last month). I have the orginal dealer/tech worksheet with the "truck in" date.
I called my dealer yesterday and talked to the service Manager and he said if there is cracks they will replace all the tire with no charge to me. The truck only has 4200 miles on it,but sitting and not moving for all those months got the better of the tires. I the drivers side must have been the sunny side as they are very bad compared to the passenger side.

So I'm heading to the dealer on Thrus to have them swap out the tires..This is my first Honda and so far the service is second to none .
The day I bought the truck they also installed a new battery the one in the truck was dead from sitting so long, they also changed the oil(245miles) the service Manager said it has been sitting for over 12 months and it needed fresh oil...

I have never had this kind of service with ANY other truck I've owned..

There is away to read the year that your tire was made. It's printed on the tire with a number code. I have no idear how to read it. The Tire dealer should tell you have to read it. Cracks in tires are from ageing on the rubber or bad tires.
Good luck.
If car or truck is on a lot for 16 to 18 month, I would ask for a extended warranty (Honda Warranty) or you better sell it be your warranty is up. Check your oil about once a month.
One more thing, I would post to hondatech and ask about the engine and transmission on a lot for 16 to 18 month.

OK why would I ask about an exteneded warranty, why would I sell it before the warranty is up, why would I check my oil once a month??? All because the truck sat on the lot for 16 months????? Give me a break....

I build race and restore trucks/motorcycles for a living and have been turning wrenches for 30+ years so please tell me the answer to your riddle

Re: Michelin LTX tires replaced at 24,000 miles

If a engine seat for a long time and not run,16 to 18 months, the oil lays in the bottom on the oil pan and the engine and value are dry and moisture builds iin the engine. There a special oil for storing, I would say no problem. You stated you are tech and know about engines. I hope it works out for you.
And if I'm wrong about this, I would like know what you thinking.

As I stated in my post the truck had 240 something miles on it when I bought it. It did not sit un-started or un driven for 16 months,it was not stored just not driven a whole lot... There will be no adverse effects from the lack of milage for 16 months...

I'm sorry if I can across a like an ass-h*^# it's been a long day. Thanks for just trying to help out a fellow ROC member..

As long as it is driven occasionally, it wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure it's been at least test driven sitting on a lot rather than sitting "stored."

No problem, I was just trying to help. If the truck was taking out for time to time, I would not have problem with that.
I hope you evening will be better then your day.

Re: Michelin LTX tires replaced at 24,000 miles

I GOT THE IMPRESSION FROM THE MICHELIN DEALER THAT THE HOME OFFICE EXPLAINED THAT THE TIRES SHOULD NOT CRACK FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I THINK IF YOU READ THEIR WARRENTY, THEY PRORATE THE WARE ON THE TIRES, BUT HAVE AT LEAST 6 YEARS WORKING "LIFE"

THE MAIN THING THAT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME, WAS THE FACT THE TIRES SHOULD HAVE NOT STARTED CRACKING BETWEEN THE TREADS THIS SOON.
$194.96 VRS $779.96 FOR REPLACEMENT OF 4 TIRES WAS A GREAT RELIEF. MICHELIN STANDS BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT.

I HAD NO CRACKING ON THE SIDES OF THE TIRES.
