Tighten fuel cap displayed and blinking

Hey all,

Today I got in the RL and drove for about 10 miles and then parked it for about 2 hours. When I returned, got in the RL and started it up, I got the message "TIGHTEN FUEL CAP" and it was blinking where my mileage and trip mileage are normally displayed. I hit the reset button, after calling my dealership and the mileage and trip mileage came back. When I turn off the RL and re-start it the message returns but a push of the re-set button removes the blinking message untill such time I turn the RL back off. I was told by the dealership, this display "TIGHTEN FUEL CAP" would take anywhere form 3 days to 3 weeks to clear out. Dealership says they have no known reason for it cause. To make this even more odd, is its been over 100 miles since I last filled up the tank and I KNOW for certian I turned the gas cap till it clicked at least three times. So may question is, has anyone seen this displayed message on thier RL and how long did it take to clear out. Plus Honda Tech if you read this could you chime in. Thanks in advance.

Use the forum SEARCH tool. This has been discussed a bunch around these parts!

I had the dreaded loose fuel cap message displayed a day after I used a jerry can to put gas in my Ridgeline. I assume it somehow affected some sort of gas fume polygizmo. The message went away in about 3 days...

Re: Tighten fuel cap displayed and blinking

I will still maintain that in 98% of the cases of "check fuel cap" complaints..... it is a loose fuel cap. I am of course open to the other possibility, that there is something amiss with the evap leak detection system.... but the only way my mind will be changed is if it happens to me.

Looses cap = warning message

Wait it out and it'll reset itself.

Re: Tighten fuel cap displayed and blinking

For me...I know I tightened the fuel cap and it clicked several times. It took about 10 days after I got gas for the message to displayed. I was advised to just get a new gas cap and have the message cleared out. Thoughts.......

Re: Tighten fuel cap displayed and blinking

Do a search on this. It happened three times to me, each time reset by the dealer. They finally got together with honda and replaced a thingamajig near the fuel tank. Under warranty, of course. Never had another problem (knock on wood now that I'm talking about it). I posted what part was replaced but can't remember now and too lazy to dig thru my paperwork. Common problem which Honda is aware of. Have the dealer fix it once and for all.

This is my post from another thread, it shut off by itself after about a week and a tank of gas:
