Re: Under body noise with ice and slush.

hi....I was up on some high mountain road today and experienced the same grinding noise from the middle of the front axle area.....sounds like a gear ratcheting against a spline or something bad like that.

I have heard it this noise before when I was braking hard going down a steep off-road trail over loose material.

Otherwise no noise when I go forward, just when I brake on slippery road conditions.

Anyone have any ideas??

That is the sound of the ABS (anti lock brakes) working. It is normal if you are experiencing low traction braking conditions.

Thanks Chris,

I hope that is all that the sound is caused by , but I am pretty sure that this sound is distincly different from that chattering pulse of the brake system.

It seems to be more towards the center of the front axel.

I am going to see if I can talk the service manager into going for a run and see what he thinks.

Re: Under body noise with ice and slush.

I had the same problem - Ice builds up on the center drive shaft support and the drive shaft rubs against the ice and make sthe noise. Like the other members note climb under there and knock the ice off - if you don't the ice will scrape the paint off the drive shaft or damage the shaft support.

Re: Under body noise with ice and slush.

I did eventually take it to the dealer and they said that they removed the pan that covers the driveshaft and gravel had made its way in there. That surely cant be good for the driveshaft. Too make me feel better they said that it was the first time they have seen it. Mind you they could be feeding me a line but it is way better now.
