tarp wrapped around drive axle

ok so let me start by saying i don't know anything about cars except how to change the oil. I was driving and got a tarp caught between the long piece and the front axle. after an hour of cutting and tearing we freed the tarp. we did cut off some plastic where the pipe meets the front axle. whatever that part that turns,. i'm not sure if it was the melted tarp or a flange that we cut through but everything seems ok except for the smell of the tarp on the converter. anyone know if i should be worried? i put more grease where the two parts meet and there is no debris there whatsovever. just worried about that lip or flange i may have cut through.

Re: tarp wrapped around drive axle

Take a picture if you can of the area where you cut off the "flange" and there will be plenty of advice from the masses here on what to do. Meanwhile, there is no part of this truck you should be putting grease on by yourself, especially not if you are not knowledgeable about trucks. Leave that to the mechanics, else you are asking for a gooey mess either dripping on your garage floor or flying back on everything under your truck while you drive.

Re: tarp wrapped around drive axle

Reminds me of the time I was mowing my Mom's yard with the old Wheel Horse. She had just had indoor/outdoor carpet put on her front porch. There was some left and she asked the installers to glue it to her walkway. Guess waht happened when I drove the old Wheel Horse over he walkway. Took hours for me to cut the carpet out from under the deck!!

Re: tarp wrapped around drive axle

after looking at my wife's pilot i'm 99% sure all is ok. the only difference is that the ridgeline tapers just before the universal joint? where as the pilot is straight all the way thru? still have the collared end just as the pilot. i think i just lost a little paint on the drive shaft. might go to the dealer tomorrow and take a peak to verify.

Sounds as if you may have cut a cv joint boot. I would have some one look at it before you do any damage and star supporting you fav. Honda parts dept.

Re: tarp wrapped around drive axle

Looks like there is nothing to worry about. It might stink of plastic burning for a while if some got onto the converter... but otherwise you should be OK.
