torsion bar needed?

I just bought a camper, about 4600 lbs dry. The guy selling it to me says I need to use the weight support to attach to the hitch so that it doesn't bow in the middle,(I'm new to this, so excuse me if my lingo isn't correct). '
I planned on installing one, but the way I read the owners manual, it sounds like Honda doesn't reccomend using the hitch/weight support. Any ideas or reccomendations?
Thanks, Ryan

Re: torsion bar needed?

Ryan,

If you do a search on "weight distributing hitch" or "wdh" in this forum you will find some very good threads on the advantages / disadvantages of using a weight distributing hitch.

This link is to a fairly recent discussion:

Weight Distribution Hitch

These links give an overview of the techie side:

http://www.reese-hitches.com/about_weight.htm

http://www.equalizerhitch.com/

http://www.etrailer.com/faq/aboutwd.asp

The Ridgeline owners manual has a good towing section.

Personally I am a firm believer in weight distributing hitches, as well as sway controls, and electric trailer brakes. My travel trailer weighs 2900 pounds dry, 3600 pounds loaded...

With a dry weight of 4600 pounds you are close to, if not already exceeding, the Ridgeline's maximum tow rating. Loading much of anything in the trailer or truck will push you over the rated limit. You may want to review your options very carefully as you move forward…

I hope this info helps you...

Re: torsion bar needed?

Just got a 10,000# one on eBay for less than $200. If you're willing to do a little instruction following, you can save $200 off the price my trailer dealer quoted.
