Re: Do I need a dealer to install a hitch?

I takes about 15 minutes to do it yourself. I used a floor jack to help hold it in place while I bolted it on. It's already been mentioned, but you only need a class III (also, these are the most common on non commercial trucks)

Re: Do I need a dealer to install a hitch?

There are several companies that make hitches for the RL. They are very easy to install because the frame has predrilled holes with nuts welded to the top side of the frame. All you have to do is remove the hangers from the muffler, line up the holes in the hitch with those in the frame, insert the bolts (they come with the hitch), and tighten them up. Although it was a little tricky, I did this install by myself. The only specialized tool you will need is a torque wrench to make sure you tighten the bolts to the proper setting (75 ft/lbs I think). Torque wrenches are not that expensive, besides it may come in handy for a future project. For the wiring, since I never plan to pull a trailer with brakes, I just went to the local RV/camper place of business and had them put a T-1 connector and a flat four-pin plug. With the T-1 connector, no wires have to be cut. The hitch cost about $150-160 (including shipping), torque wrench $10-15, and the T-1 connector + labor was around $80. Good luck.

Save some money and install it yourself. All the holes are there for you to use, just get the hitch and start. It's actually that easy.

Re: Do I need a dealer to install a hitch?

I received two quotes to have the hitch and harness installed. Both were over $1000. Is this normal?

Check out my post, cost me less that $ 400 including the electric brake controller. If you just need a hitch and trailer lights you can do it for less than $200(yourself).

I've been thinking about putting on hitch and I suppose it just dpeneds on finding the right price, but the wireing is what would spook me as I'm far from being an electrician. Don't think I'd be putting on brake control but would like a flat and round plug in as trailers can have both. Does Honda's plug in have just one or both?

The factory setup has both the round 7-pin and the flat 4-pin plug-ins. But if the trailer has a 7-pin connector, then it has electric brakes, so you would need a brake controller. I would decide on what kind of trailer I am going to be towing and do the appropriate setup for it.

Re: Do I need a dealer to install a hitch?

Installing the hitch is just a bolt on. I did have to drop the tailpipe down to get the hitch up and in position, but wasn't a big deal. I bought the plug and wiring harness from NAPA and it is basically a plug and play.
