Had Uhaul install hitch, no power to connector

I know there are 1000's of posts on this topic. The installer found the pre-wired connector and pulled down prior to installing the hitch. When they went to install the wiring harness, he could not find any power to test. I had them abort the wiring piece and now I dont have any power. What am I facing here. Laymens terms only please!!!

I'm pretty sure that there will be no power to that connector until you add the relays and fuses that come with the OEM harness.

So, are people getting the OEW harness or just having installer splice in to the brake/tail light wires?

Re: Had Uhaul install hitch, no power to connector

The "pre-wired" connector that the guys at U-Haul pulled down is not connected at the other end. Honda's definition of "pre-wired" just means that they have run a wire from under the rear of the truck to a spot under the dash. In order to use this wiring, you need to purchase a kit from Honda.

This kits contains two control modules and some relays that will need to be installed under the dash. It also has several fuses that will be added to one of the fuse boxes under the hood. And last, but not least, the kit contains the wiring harness that is designed to connect to the plug the U-Haul guys found. This harness provides you with both a 7 pin and 4 pin trailer connection.

It is possible to tap trailer power off the taillights in much the same way that other trucks set up trailer power. However, the honda wiring kit has the advantage of providing a straight, fused, and isolated electrical system for your trailer lights and power. If something goes wrong with the trailer's electrical system, it will not impact the rest of the trucks electronics and lights.

Installing the Honda kit requires some contortionist ability but is a fairly reasonable do-it-yourself project. Many members, myself included, have chosen to use the Honda wiring kit in conjunction with an aftermarket hitch. Hope this helps.

Great, I think I will give it a go. I have seen the instructions, and while tricky, I believe I can manage.

How difficult is it to attach the wiring harness receptable to the new hitch. Seems the only advantage of the OEM hitch is that the OEM harness attaches nicely for a factory look. Is there a way or available bracket on the UHAUL or other after market hitch that will give you the same look?
Thanks,

Re: Had Uhaul install hitch, no power to connector

Thanks and understood... just ordered the OEM harness, but was wondering if there is an aftermarket hitch that the OEM harness will fit nicely with. Seems like many people have jury rigged, welded, bolted, etc the socket to the aftermarket hitches and I haven't come accross any postings that point to any aftermarket brand with a bracket that will accomodate the socket. It's a shame because the OEM hitch is hideously expensive when compared to the aftermarket brands.

Love the truck ... they should just sell all body styles with hitches from the factory.

Re: Had Uhaul install hitch, no power to connector

How does the U-Haul hitch look? Is it visable or is it recessed up into the undercarriage?

I have the OEM wiring harness installed and now need the hitch and am thinking about the U-Haul ... $160, installed.
