Question 5 Pin Wiring Harness for Trailer?

So, the boat I just bought has a 5-Pin Trailer. My RL came with a 4-Pin. It 'works' but I have to put a lock on the trailer before I back up to disengage the trailer brakes.

I went to my local Autozone and they said I'd have to have a 5-pin manufactured for my RL.

is this accurate? Has anyone else located a 5-Pin harness?

Thanks

Re: 5 Pin Wiring Harness for Trailer?

Many years ago I used a 5 Pin wiring harness on my old Coleman pop-up camper. The fifth wire on it was for the electric trailer brakes.

Here are a few links to wiring diagrams and sources for a 5 Pin harness.

http://www.etrailer.com/faq_wiring.aspx

http://www.campertrailers.org/traile...ng_diagram.htm

http://www.accessconnect.com/trailer_wiring_diagram.htm

http://www.tropictrailer.com/wiring-diagram.html

In most of these links the fifth wire is shown being used for electric trailer brakes as I used it. Since boat trailers usually use surge type hydraulic brakes I doubt your fifth pin is being used for electric trailer brakes or a break away emergency braking system as shown in one of these links.

I would start by asking the boat dealer and / or trailer manufacture for a wiring diagram and specifically what the fifth wire is supposed to be used to connect. It may be optional to use that wire for trailer back up or running lights, battery charger, etc....

Re: 5 Pin Wiring Harness for Trailer?

Welcome to the ROC... If you have the OEM hitch/wire setup, then all you have to do is purchase a 7 pin to 5 pin adapter... You can get that at any Wal-Mart or auto parts store...
