ATF Temp Gauge?

Has anyone installed a gauge to monitor the exact temperature of the ATF? I am aware of the warning light that appears when ATF is dangerously hot but wondering if anyone is monitoring the temp and if so, what and how the gauge was installed?

Really don't think there is a need for one with trhis truck. Had a Ford F-250 Super Duty with automatic and installed one on the window pillar because of Ford's transmission problems when backing up with a load. Next year (2002) Ford finally placed one in the dash.

I think a transmission fluid temperature gauge is a very sensible feature to have. This can be especially useful to those of us who pull trailers. It can provide early warning of climbing transmission temperature allowing us to ease up before actually overheating. I had a Ford Excursion V10 that had this as part of the factory instrumentation and I really liked it. It would have made sense to include it on the RTX model as it is factory equipped for towing.

Unfortunately I haven't any info on aftermarket fluid temp kits. If one is available I would be very interested.

I like Autometer gauges, especially their Cobalt line. (www.autometer.com)
I think the biggest question aside from finding a good place to mount the gauge will be how/where to place the sending unit. Some kits expect you to insert a T in the line to the ATF cooler and that isnt something I'd be willing to do atleast at this point in time. Personally I'm not going to risk causing a failure that could be blamed on metal shavings no matter how careful you are.
Someone here probably already knows, but if there already is a suitable pre-tapped location on the transmission, then this should be an easy job.

Hi, had just used a cobalt volt meter for another car and liked the way it looked, but looking now at the Autometer site it looks like they have more options then when I did this some time ago. Looks like you could do a pretty good job of either matching or contrasting the existing dash. I'm interested in doing this also and perhaps a volt meter if I can figure a way to make it look like it belongs in the truck. I was hoping someone would chime in to your original post with a great location for the ATF temp sending unit. I know some folks in other vehicles even use the ATF drain plug which may be OK, but you may also risk damage since presumably its at a low point in the pan. To tell the truth I'm not even sure whare the ATF drain is, perhaps its well protected and not a problem. Then of course you just have to mess with it when you change the ATF. I'm still unlikely to do it if it comes to that. I'm going to hopefully crawl under there this weekend and see if there just isnt some ideal place to simply screw something in.
