I had the dealer do the install like you are describing on my new 2008 RTS as part of a complicated trade in on a new 2008 RTX I bought a couple of days earlier. I had to throw them a bone to do this trade back and the hitch install at their highest price was this bone. They hit me for $750 so you can assume you are not getting any bargain from your dealer at the price they are stating.

What does the control unit do? I don't have a travel trailer or boat, but just want to tow a trailer for mulch, lawn tractor, etc. Does just having the wiring harness allow a trailer's lights and brake lights to work or does it require the control unit --- or is the control unit for electric brakes on trailers?

Noob question, I know, but trying to determine if just getting the OEM towing package, which doesn't appear to include the control unit, is enough for my needs.

control unit is for the brakes. Basic kit is all you need.

My salesman talked me out of the hitch, believe it or not. He recommended an aftermarket hitch for half the price instead and stated all the wires and everything were already there. I'm thinking now this may not be true or maybe he means the wires for the harness to attach to are there aleady?

I see in some places that there's a parts kit for $24 in some places. Do you need this to get the appropriate bolts and other hardware necessary for the installation?

The hitch comes with the hardware. All Honda OEM accessories come complete.

So if I order the parts, then all I need is the wire harness and the hitch? Just want to make sure I order all the parts I need if I don't get it through my dealer.
