custom bed rack (build thread)

Just picked up most of the material to start on this.
I just wasn't happy with my options , I like the Sporttraxx but you cant use it with Hard bed cover.
This will be a simple aluminum rack that will bolt on the bed side rails.
The crossbar will be the same dimension as the Yak bars so I can still use all my Yak accessories .
I will use the factory roof rack as the front part of the rack.

If anybody has done this I would love to see pics...

I will update when there is progress.

Re: custom bed rack (build thread)

Will be interested to see your progress and pictures. I have been thinking about doing the same thing. I have two Kayaks and would use the roof rack for the front and make a rack for the back. I would like to make it so i could remove it easily when not in use.

Re: custom bed rack (build thread)

Very Nice!

A few questions:
1) How did you attach to the truck (and is it easily removed when not needed)
2) What stock did you use and how did you determine what to use?

I really like your idea, perfect for a canoe

Nice, simple and clean! How are you fastening it?

1- Right now its attached with 1/4" and # 10 sheetmetal screws.
Its kinda difficult to find a good way to fasten it in a clean and strong fation.
Its very strong but maybe I will go back and make a nut plate for under the pinch weld ( seam) maybee...
The crossbar removes easy with 4 bolts , if I wanted to remove the whole shooting match it would be 5-10 minuets removing screws.
The way I have it fastened it would not be advised to remove on a regular basis.

2-
1x3x1/8 angle
1x1x1/8 box
2x1x1/8 box

1-1/8 x 1/4 wall tube
3/16 x 1-1/2 flat bar

All 6061

I guess the I chose them from experience and availability of material.
