Re: Steering Wheel Creak

As of today, the TSB with the additional operation (add urea grease to the airbag locator pins) and a new "vehicles applied to" is now posted and available to Honda dealers. It now includes all 2006 and 2007 models.

After doing the steering wheel TSB myself, I could see for certain what causes the major creaking: the chrome surrounding the airbag locater pins. You can actually see the friction point where the airbag rubs on the chrome. I put a square of heavy-duty felt over the square under the pin and that took care of the problem. I did it about three weeks ago and haven't heard anything since. I'm not sure if will solve everyone's problem, but it certainly took care of mine.

Re: Steering Wheel Creak

Hey Paul,
I have noticed a barely audible squeak today coming from the silver trim piece surrounding the airbag on the left side of the wheel. I didn't apply felt there originally, because I didn't want to remove the steering wheel. It isn't that difficult, but I heard no noise after I put the felt in the locater pin area. I'm going to take the airbag out again and remove the steering wheel completely to place some felt on the trim also. I think the major problem everyone is going to have is getting the proper felt. I happened to have a large felt kit I acquired when I was a tech at Lexus. I'll be sure to photograph what I do, but I believe someone has already done that on ROC, and they had excellently illustrated instructions.

Re: Steering Wheel Creak

So being extremely new to this site, My 2007 RTX has a clunk/tick after turning a hard left out of my driveway after stratining out and going a few feet. Is this the same problem that's being referred to?

I don't think you are having the same problem we are referring to in this post. We are talking about a squeak from the steering wheel itself that is heard when applying pressure to the ten o'clock or two o'clock positions usually. It sounds as if you have a problem in the steering gear bolts or a strut mount. If you can't isolate the problem, bring it to the dealer (and you'll have to bring it there anyway to have it repaired under warranty). The few problems that RLs have should be well-known to dealerships by now.

Re: Steering Wheel Creak

My wheel creaked badly depending on the weather. Took it in one time, and they did not fix it.
I fixed it myself by shooting a "quick" zap of WD-40 into the opening on the left side of the silver trim piece.
I used the extension needle on the can.
It has been probably about 9 months now and no squeek at all.
Give it a try.

Re: Steering Wheel Creak

Search and ye shall find indeed...

I'm glad I found this as (as much as I hate to do it), I have a steering wheel creaking sound, a BAD rattle coming from the glove box area. I hate my dealership and the closest one is across town. I MAY just take it in for the noises as they bother me to no end.

Re: Steering Wheel Creak

I think this creak is the sound I have been hearing when making a turn. I thought it was either the steering wheel, or possibly the shoulder belt extending/retracting from just my arm moving when turning.

I'll try my next turn without the seat belt on to confirm, I'll just have to time it between the seat belt chimes to be able to hear it!
