Parking Brake Won't Release In Very Cold Weather HSN 06/06

From the June 2006 Honda Service News:

Parking Brake Won’t Release
in Very Cold Weather
Do you have a ’06 Ridgeline in your shop with a
parking brake that won’t release first thing in the
morning in very cold weather? A water leak could
be the culprit.
The parking brake cables leave the passenger
compartment in the lowest part of the floor. If
water puddles there, it could leak down into the
parking brake cable housing and freeze,
especially on a cold, frosty night. If that happens,
the cables won’t move and the parking brake
won’t release.
To fix this problem, track down the source of the
water leak and repair it. Then replace both
parking brake cables. For the how-tos, check out
S/B 05-045,
Water Leak at Right Front Floor and S/
B 06-016,
Water Leak Near the Right Rear Door.

Great info! Thanks for sharing...

Should there be a special section for these HSN bulletins?

I realise this is an old post, but the last 3 mornings when I pulled out of the drive it felt like parking brake was dragging. Each time it cleared up by the time I got out of my subdivision.
Took it to the dealer this am and he couldn't duplicate the problem.
He did tell me to park it overnight without using the parking brake and see if it felt the same way when I start out the next morning.
He also gave me a copy of the this bulletin.
I feel confident I don't have the leak because I have watched that like a hawk.
But we have had snow on the ground the last few days which I have tracked into the truck. Guess that could be the source of the water.
I won't set the parking brake tonight, will post tomorrow what I find out.

It seems to me that if there was a water leak... it shouldn't change anything with the parking brake. The common water leaks have been on the right, or passenger side. The parking brake cables run under the driver's foot area. It would need to be an enormous water leak to leak over to the driver's side. I recently replaced the right side parking brake cable on my RL for a similar hanging/dragging condition. It has been fine ever since, and it has seen quite a few wet/snowy/cold days and nights.

I assume that it ended up being auctioned off by Honda's insurance company. For everyone else's sake, I'd like to think that this one was the worst, but anyone who ended up with an Amazon Green vin 2HJYK16526H552332 has a reason to get this checked out.

could be the pads not sliding freely in the caliper? mine did that too, as well as the cable actually freezing on and the two symptoms were noticeably different.

Parking brake & cold weather "Woun't Release". No Pun Intended. In this neck of the woods that info is decades old no matter the make of the vehicle "Bin der done dat". The un-written rule never apply your Parking Brakes in very cold weather "Unless of course you have to for specific reasons"

Results of not setting parking brake have proved inconclusive. Last two mornings were above freezing.
