Need to replace a couple of tpms sensors. What exactly do i have to do?

Well I used some of that "green slime" stuff to fix punctures in tires. I didnt know it would affect tpms sensors. I have found some on ebay and and other places. Who can program them for me? I talked to a local tire shop and he acted like they could handle installation but I dont know if he knew about the programming.
any input would be great thanks

its for a 2006 Ridgeline RT

All you have to do is get the tire removed swap out sensors and remount tires. That's it the sensors are self programming. All you have to do is fill with proper tire pressure and drive. Good luck

You will have to get rid of all the "green slime" first, from the rim and wheel.

I am not sure that the slime residue can be removed from the tire; they may need to be replaced to keep from killing the new TPMS modules - the rims can be washed with a stiff brush and steel wool until all residue is gone.

The TPMS modules attach with a 10mm nut on the shaft of the module.

That's another good reason to read your owners manual

I read my owner's manual all the way through when I got my Ridgeline, but I sure don't remember anything about not using something like the green slime to temporarily fix a flat. Reading the OM is one thing....remembering it at some point down the road without regularly refreshing yourself on the stuff in it is something else.

You don't have to replace your tires just have them wash them out with a hose and wipe them down inside before repairing and remounting them. Also you should just try and clean the sensors and blow them off with compressed air maybe the little hole in the sensor is clogged. I work at a tire store and have never seen a sensor ruined from fix a flat or green slime. We do warn people that have used it that it may have damaged their sensors but just to cover our selves. If your sensors are ruined though you will more than likely have to go to the dealer to have them programmed to your computer most tire stores don't have the right computer to program Japanese and Korean vehicles yet.

'06-'08 Ridgeline TPMS don't need programing. Just buy a new sensor (if you need it) and mount in the tire. The truck with figure out the rest.

Hmm jetpack have you replaced one of your sensors yet?

Honda TPMS Replacement

If a sensor proves faulty or is damaged then it will need to be replaced. This requires a new sensor to be fitted and the ECU to be reprogrammed with its unique ID and its position on the vehicle. The procedures for all vehicles are illustrated in the Bartec 'Mitchell1 Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems Guide' which shows service requirements, reset procedures, dismounting/mounting instructions, torque specifications etc for all Honda makes/models and years (where fitted with Direct TPMS).

The technician should always: refer to manufacturer's specifications for proper torque requirements when replacing nuts and valve cores; use new grommets, nuts, plastic or nickel-plated valve caps and electro-less, nickel-plated valve cores when performing any tire service; never use a brass valve core or un-plated brass cap with an aluminum TPMS sensor stem. Contact between dissimilar metals can cause galvanic corrosion, which can lead to loss of air pressure.

Note: The technician should avoid the use of any liquid or tire sealant injected into tires equipped with TPMS as this may block the pressure port and cause malfunction. If evidence of the use of tire sealant is noted upon dismounting the tire, it is highly recommended that the TPMS are replaced. It is also very important to remove all residual sealant from the inside of the tire and rim surfaces prior to re-installing the tire.

The Honda range of cars unlike most vehicles made in North America do not have an inbuilt relearn mode to enable the vehicles to relearn the TPMS IDs when a TPMS repair tool is used to activate the sensor. It is important therefore to have access to a Bartec Wheelrite TECH400 tool which is able to diagnose Honda TPMS issues and also has an extra interface to the vehicle OBDII/CANbus to communicate with the vehicle Engine Control Unit (ECU) and download the TPMS data. The Wheelrite TECH400 has this feature.

The tool can display the OE replacement part number for the TPMS sensor to ensure the correct part is fitted. It can program the car and also turn off the TPMS warning light!

Finally when the TPMS replacement procedure is complete it is good practice to do a final audit and print the results out for the customer. This completes the circle for your liability protection (showing the job has been completed professionally) and affirms your technical reputation with the customer.

Re: Need to replace a couple of tpms sensors. What exactly do i have to do?

Some honda models do require reprogramming but not the 06-08 ridgeline. The 09 and 10 RL does require programming, but all you do to program an 06-08 tpms sensor is air up the tire and drive. It programs itself. I know this because i put tpms sensors in my old 20" wheels and never had to have any honda tech work done to it. You ask if he ever had a tpms sensor replaced, but the better question is have you ever had a tpms sensor replaced on an 06-08 RL? Im guessing not, if you dont believe me type in tpms in the search which will unveil lots of threads stating that they replaced their wheels, got a full size spare, or new tpms sensors where they reprogrammed itself. It only helps to throw the book at someone if you can stand behind your thesis to begin with. End rant

Re: Need to replace a couple of tpms sensors. What exactly do i have to do?

I found a previous post I made concerning the programming of the TPMS for a 2006-2008 Ridgeline.

I don't know what book Bosco83 got his info from, but this is directly from a 2006-2007 Ridgeline service manual.

"After rotating the tires or replacing a tire pressure sensor, drive the vehicle for at least 40 seconds at a speed of 15 mph (24km/h) or more, and all the sensor IDs will be memorized automatically"
