Re: New wheels finally!!

Hey Dusty, it kind of looks like a low rider from south of the border with the small tires on it.

Re: New wheels finally!!

Does 3 dollars per tire removal seem expensive to anyone? The only reason im considering it is because i dont want the hassle of disposing the tires since you cant dump them anywhere around here. I thought these would sell but they are dry rotted bad so im just gonna scrap them.

Re: New wheels finally!!

I saw a Lambo with gloss black spokes and flat black rims. we also saw a GTO with gloss black spokes and brushed aluminum rims. Both looked very good.

We also saw alot of body colored rims today. Here's a few examples.

Re: New wheels finally!!

I powdered coated some NSX wheels a long time ago, another option you can look at... don't gotta worry about stone chips.

Re: New wheels finally!!

Powder coating will probably be later in these wheels lifes for now I'm just gonna put several good layers of paint on them. I'm on a budget so that's why powder coating is out of the question at this moment.

Just an update I have one wheels just about ready for primer, but me and these little plastic rivets are not getting along. One is missing and the others are just terrible looking. So I'm considering going to get some stainless steel allen heads and cut them down to counter sink in the holes really tight and squirt some glue in just for safe measures. So a possible negative is looking to be a positive. Ill take a pic in a little while so you can see them in bare metal before I throw primer on them

That was my thought as well on the powder coating; but I went a different route like you are now. What type of paint are you going to use?

Re: New wheels finally!!

Heavy build primer to hide any small imperfections then coating it heavily with flat black equipment paint from tractor supply. 30 dollars for a gallon of flat black so ill put 3 or 4 good heavy coats on these wheels. Once the thick primer is laid down a lot of color won't matter much but I want to ensure a good thick coat to try to resist as many rock chips and rash from the trail

Sounds like that should cover it, definitely post pics and advise of the durability of the paint you are using.

I used Rust-oleum primer and paint and of course the wheels were sanded down in the areas that were going to be painted, including the inside of the wheel. The paint color is actually hammered black, but when the wheels cured you can see some of the copper tones coming through. The number of coats used was 2 each.

So far haven't seen any chips or any other issues, even after playing in the mud a while back!

Re: New wheels finally!!

Looks good Tracy! The chrome wheel prep is a real PITA! But im hoping to have these done and painted sometime next week or the week after. I get my final pay check on the 10th before unemployment begins so thats where the paint money will be coming from. So far i have went over the wheels with a dremel and its working great! I have painted hundreds of wheels before with all kinds of paint, but never chrome wheels. I will be sure to document my progress of course. Here is what i have gotten done today: 1 wheel nearly ready for primer, just lack a few spots here and there, so should be in primer tomorrow hopefully. Im only doing one wheel at a time to prevent rusting. They will all be painted at the same time but primed immediately after completion. Here is wheel #1
