Aftermarket subwoofer to factory radio possible?

My RTL has the factory 6 disc CD changer with NAV. I also have the factory subwoofer. My question is, can I hookup more subwoofers to this radio? Is it possible? Do I have to remove the factory subwoofer? Has anyone done this? I don't want to buy a new radio because I want to keep my nav and steering wheel controls. I would like to put a custom box under the back seat.

You need an fm modulator ( i believe thats what its called) which you hard wire into your wiring harness that goes to the radio. This will give you RCA out puts which is the essential part of the sound getting to the speakers. All your power connections will be the same as any system except your remote turn on wire. It can be wired to the key on (ACC) wire so its powered on and off with the key. Scoche makes this unit and i believe it can be purchased at wal-mart its a blue box. You just need the schematic for wire colors and functions. You wire one side to the radio side of the plug and the other to the dash side. There may be an easier way now a says, but i have installed this this way many many times. Even recently on a 2006 infiniti g35

fm what???????????????????????????

Use the search, many good threads about subwoofer boxes, most just replace the original plastic vented original sub that sounds boomy in most cases you will need an amp for an umpgrade.

I would start with the better speakers first if you have not replaced the originals. The original system sounds way too boomy and it needs better speakers.

Re: Aftermarket subwoofer to factory radio possible?

I think 07_rtx answered an entirely different question.

Many here have used aftermarket subs with the factory headunit.

#1 thing to remember is that the factory sub does not have its own amp. The headunit has an amplifier for the sub and we can guess it might be 30-40watts (but no one knows for sure).

So your replacement sub will either need to be happy with that kind of power or you will need another amp that accepts speaker level inputs.

It's actually called a line-output-convertor most commonly referred to as a LOC. However most amplifiers have them built-in and some like JBL, MTX or JL Audio will not need a remote turn on since the amp will use the speaker level in to turn itself on.
