Post Do I Need A New Battery Or Not?

Okay. I work as a cameraman for my local cable station, and during the time that I am setting up for a shoot I like to play some music from the car for all the guys. So, before filming a football game, I was blasting Led Zeppelin for about maybe 40 minutes, and the music started fading out. I turn the car off and try turning it back on, and it won't start. The dials start twitching and everything, and it is obvious that the battery is dead.

Should this happen? How long should a normal battery last? I am contemplating getting a new battery, unless you guys think that blasting music for forty minutes will kill the battery. I was only playing music, keep in mind. I turned off everything else, and the car was not running so I wasn't wasting gas.

You battery is probably on its last gasp. Since you plan to routinely have it perform both starting and some deep-cycle duty, you might want the replacement to be one that is qualified for both, and has large total energy capacity. That'll be certain spiral cell models. You would do well to check out the Orbital Extreme and Optima Yellow Top.

Is it the original battery? If so it might be time to replace. If you have a batteries plus or batteries patrol in your area take it there and they will test it for you.

If you take it any Advanced Auto Store, They will test it and change it out if you should need a new one free of charge while you wait.

Ask me how I know....

Mine did this on Saturday as well, with no extra non-running loads on the battery. Advance Auto tested it for me, found a dead cell. I replaced it. 45,000 miles / 1 week shy of 3 years old. Seems to be about standard life for a battery these days.

It seems to be the average lifetime for Honda batteries. I don't say many nice things about domestic vehicles but it would be nice if Honda would emulate GM in 2 areas. Batteries and paint. My wife's ancient 96' Sunfire convertible still has the original battery and the paint is excellent. I wish I could get my Ridgeline to shine as easily as her 14 year old car.

I've also had a few Ford batteries (Motorcraft) that lasted almost a decade.

Re: Do I Need A New Battery Or Not?

Smart chargers work and add months to the overall life of a battery.
They do need 72 hours to complete a cycle.
Read the pdf manual.

Re: Do I Need A New Battery Or Not?

Time to replace. Many systems are active and drawing power while the key is in the accessory position.

I've never had a battery last more than 4 years, Ford, Mazda, GM, Mazda, Honda or Kia.

The battery in our Odyssey didn't even make it 3 years. Luckily, they replaced it under warranty. Honda is the only mfg. I know that does a full, non-prorated, replacement.

Re: Do I Need A New Battery Or Not?

Our Pilot is 4 years old as of Oct.31st and is still on the original battery. It's been drained completely once when my wife forgot and left the ignition on. She shut down, then turned the ignition back on to retrieve a CD... and forgot to take the keys out.

So not all Honda batteries bite the dust early. (knock on wood!)
