Re: Transmission Fluid: To change or not to change?

What most people (including many members of this Forum) need to start understanding is that the Honda Auto Trannys are NOT your basic, good-ole Chevy/Crapsler/Ford/etc transmission.

Their pans aren't flat and don't require removal of 19 bolts and getting fluid all over the upper half of your body to change. There's no filter to screw with, no gasket to replace.

It's easier than changing the oil. Bust loose a 16mm (?) plug/bolt on top of the transmission, loosen the 3/8" ratchet plug, drain. Wipe the plug clean, either re-use or get a new crush washer, replace the plug, pour 3-1/2 qts of new fluid in. Good to go.

Honda had some transmission problems in the late 90's/early 2000's. I believe they are over. No more hysteria over changing the fluid every oil change/10-20k miles..

But I have no problem with extra maintenance...Doesn't cost me anything and I would love to run across a vehicle for sale (besides mine) that has been treated that way.

Re: Transmission Fluid: To change or not to change?

I tend to never keep a vehicle long enough to change transmission fluid, but I usually follow the "severe" schedule, even though I don't tow, race, taxi, or drive through deserts. I'd much rather over-maintain and "waste" a few barrels of oil than spend thousands prematurely rebuilding an engine or transmission.

Re: Transmission Fluid: To change or not to change?

I do a lot of city driving and last spring my transmission was not shifting as smoothly in the lower gears and especially when cold. The color of the fluid was good but the transmission fluid smell was about half as fragrant. I had the fluid dumped and replaced and all my issues went away. This was way before the MM said it was time.

To each their own... It's your vehicle and you have every right to do what you feel is right.

x, how many miles were on her when you changed oil? I ask because my driving is mostly city although I believe your driving style might be a bit more spirited.
I think I'm far from needing the change as I've only got 22k miles on mine but just curious.
