Loose wire

Appeared to be a major electrical problem at first.
VTM-4 indicator light came on first.
Then battery light.
Then lit up like a Christmas tree. All indicator lights on, including beeping for seatbelt.
Then all instruments went to zero. Tach, speedometer, fuel, temp.
No power to fan, stereo, wipers, lights.
Then came back on, but 2 indicator lights on.

Dealership plugged it in, but not definitive. Could've been alternator, main computer, etc.
Mechanic did line tests, and noticed a loose wire at fuse box.
It had been arcing and caused all the problems.
Fixed connection, and no charge.
All is well.

Re: Loose wire

Which fuse box? That is a weird problem. Any idea how the wire could have become loose?

Re: Loose wire

Might want to give the dealer a shout out. Rare bird there with the no charge.

Dealer said it possibly happened during timing belt and water pump install. Wire may have inadvertantly got tugged or moved.
It was a bit of a mystery. But ended well.
If wire wasn't discovered, we could've begun installing new parts in search of the cause. Might've got expensive in a hurry.

Re: Loose wire

Happens all the time in this field. I had electrical issues on a bus a few weeks ago. It ended up being a bad ground connection at and electrical panel. The problem I was having is it would only do it once a day. Every time I moved a harness or bumped something in the panel the issue would go away. It took me a week to pin point the source.

Re: Loose wire

I would go back to that dealer and pay that tech a visit with a case of beer and a box of donuts.

Get his name and only deal with him from this day forward and make sure the "powers that be" know as much.

Re: Loose wire

Just curious, was it the primary or auxiliary fuse box?
