My RL is 4 years plus with 55K miles, battery died at tailgate after just listening to radio for an hour or so. I have this battery sitting around, look online and saw most people say it is OK to use.
It is a; Battery is an "EverStart RV Marine" deep cycle by Walmart. It is labeled 24DC-6 Trolling Deep Cycle. Amp Hrs: 75 , Crank Amps 525, Cold Crank 405 amps.
I would not want to use a deep cycle battery as a starting battery. Yes, they're both batteries, but they are designed for different purposes.
A starting battery is designed to provide high amperage for a short period of time, and remain at approx. 80% charge or greater.
A deep cycle battery is designed to provide continuous, but lower amperage, over wider charge range. So a deep cycle will not provide high cold cranking amps like a starting battery, but can withstand repeated 80% discharges much better than a starting battery.
It's best to use a starting battery for automotive purposes which is not what a deep cycle battery was designed for.
I agree, they are intentionally designed for different applications. It may work fine temporarily, or in a pinch. You would be better served and for a longer time under most conditions with a quality automotive battery.
Csimo is correct. A deep cycle battery may contain more available power than a standard automotive battery but cannot deliver that power fast enough to start an engine. A good thing to keep in mind is if a battery is rated (for example) 650Cranking Amps and 500ColdCranking Amps. If you can fit a battery in the available space with higher rating its a good idea to do it.
