Unhappy B 16 Service message

So I get the B 16 message on my onboard computer. I go to the dealer and they tell me that besides the regular oil change I expected, I gotta change the differential fluid for $180! Is that right?

I admit I wasn't in charge of maintenance of my sister's CR-V, but I don't remember having to change the diff fluid on that car after just 12,000 miles.

Is that normal for 4wd/AWD cars? Change diff fluid that quickly? I've got the extended warranty so I want to make sure I do all the required maintenance and keep my warranty valid. But $180 every 12,000 miles seems a little excessive. Maybe I've been spoiled by my BMW or something but it's strange how I feel Honda is ripping me off compared to a German car.

If it is necessary, I gotta figure out if I wanna shell out and have my dealer do it or give it to my bro-in-law (Toyota mechanic) and have him do it and figure out a way to get paperwork showing it was done. Rough timing financially since I've got a baby on the way and I'm having my backyard done right now. Honda's really gotta make a way so the diff fluid doesn't need to be changed so early (unless my dealer is trying to rip me off, which wouldn't surprise me cuz their sales people freely admit to trying to rip people off as much as they can - they're just so open and honest about it that I can't really fault the sales people for it).

Re: B 16 Service message

My dealer charges $70 for the rear diff changeout.

I also believe the first changeout is @ 12,000, after that I believe it is every 25,000 - 30,000 miles depending on what kind of driving, or towing you do.

Re: B 16 Service message

I got my B16 service message at around 9900. I decided not to change the VTM-4 fluid until the next oil change which came at 15500 miles. I was charged $59.95 for the VTM-4 service.

Re: B 16 Service message

The normal maintenance for the rear differential is at 15K and every 30K thereafter. It's not like any rear differential you've owned in the past. This maintenance is mandatory. You must use the Honda VTM-4 fluid, no substitutes. Any mechanic can do it. All they'll need is a 3/8" ratchet wrench, a 3" 3/8" socket extension, a ndrain pan, and a fluid pump. I changed out the fluid on my wife's Pilot last night. It took about 20 minutes including drain time.

My dealer's SM told me that as long as I keep the reciepts for the parts/fluids/filters etc., Honda will honor the warranty if I do the work myself. Luckily I haven't had to test that on either of our Hondas. My wife's Pilot has 106K now, and knock-knock no issues at all.

I have yet to receive any messages from my computer, (C'mon HAL!?!?) but I did figure it was time to do it around 17k miles. I paid in the range of $75-$90 at the Honda dealership.

Thanks so much guys. So I AM being screwed by the service department. Looks like they want double what other dealers charge. Guess it shouldn't be a surprise. They tack on a $4-5,000 "market adjustment" on every car they have in hopes someone is dumb enough to pay it. I was told some do but if they run into a customer who's a little more knowledgeable on market prices, they take it off without a fuss. I guess the service dept is playing the same game. Maybe I just have to bargain with them too.

Re: B 16 Service message

Ask them what the flat rate charge is for the job. The fluid is about $25.00 including the two washers.

Re: B 16 Service message

Son of an onion! thanks shovelhd. I just called and now the price has somehow dropped to "ohhh, let's say around $71." $100 miraculously disappeared. Man, Autowest Roseville Honda has some seriously shady pricing practices. Maybe I oughta dress like a bum the next time I go in for service.

Re: B 16 Service message

Where is the fill plug in the rear diff.? I was crawling around there last week and found the drain, but didn't see the fill hole. I felt around a little but the truck wasn't on a lift, so I didn't have much wiggle room under there.
