Going to the OBX This saturday... hows the ridge?

So i am taking my new wife, and our 3 year old lab and 9 week old germ shep pup to the beach after a very stressful couple of weeks to the outer banks for the day just to relax and enjoy the sun, sand, and water.

We are hoping tod rive on the beach like i used to do in my jeeps.

How does the ridge do in the soft sand? I have the stock mich tires. should i air to say 15-20 lbs and stay in 2nd with VRM-4 engaged? Any other tips or suggestions?

Thanks guys.

I'll be going down next weekend surf fishing (my company pays for this outing every year) and this will be the first time for the RL on the beach, if it does half as good as my ranger did I will be happy. If you do a search for "beach driving" you'll find lots of info like this http://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/f...ead.php?t=2871
Let us know how it goes and take some pictures.

Re: Going to the OBX This saturday... hows the ridge?

Was at OBX this AUgust and went driving on the beach. I turned on the VTM and quickly learned that I shouldn't have. Automatic Transmission light came on after driving a few miles. WHen I stepped on the gas the engine would just rev up and the vehicle wouldn't move. SO I just stopped put it in park, let the engine run, read the manual more in depth, transmission light went off, VTM went off and I was on my way. Use VTM as a last resort. Never touched the tire pressure and the drive was fine.
HAve fun

Re: Going to the OBX This saturday... hows the ridge?

air down the tires, to 15-18 psi.

turn off VSA (have to pull the VSA fuse, since it cannot be turned off with the dash switch if you have aired the tires down past 28 psi)

vtm4 lock is prob not needed as long as the VSA is off. (VSA off is way more important than vtm4 on)

re: vtm4 use in 2nd, I only use it to compression brake down hills(only time I would try to start off in 2nd is on ice, my gut tells me to always start in 1st but be carefull not to spin)

Re: Going to the OBX This saturday... hows the ridge?

No great advice here- we were there last week, but my wife started freaking out when I got on the sand.

I thought the RL handled it fine, what little I got to try. As they say, VSA off; preferablly pull the fuse; air down the tires and easy on the throttle. I did not engage the VTM and it seemed to work fine. But, like I said, I probably only go to do 200 yds. of sand driving.

We took Highway 12 North until it stopped at Corolla. The road litterallly stops at the beach with a small cul-de-sac for those that can't do the sand and must turn around. It's just too cool. The end is about 45 min. north of the highway 12 and 158 split where you first get on the Outer Banks.

Also looks to be some good sand driving / fishing off highway 12 right before you get to the large bridge at Oregon Inlet.

Have fun... we stayed in Avon and really enjoyed it; Oacrakoke Island is too cool as well.
