That Sickening Sound

Metal against metal. Yesterday morning in the rain in rush hour traffic in NYC I sideswiped a big delivery truck. Probably my fault, at least more than 50% as I was passing on the left and then I moved into the right in front of him to make a right turn. He was stopped when I started to go to the right and when I passed him, he was either still stopped or started to move and his front left bumper started hitting my RL at the end of the passenger front door and didn't stop until it caved in the bed box above the rear wheel. It sounded like I had hit a garbage can and when I stopped around the corner, I expected to see a nice sized scratch, but when I saw what the side of the RL looked like, I almost lost my breakfast. Just got back from the bodyshop and estimate is $8000. They are going to cut the right side off at the rood line behind the rear door and reform the right rear of the RL. Passender door in back is likely completely shot and front passenger door will need smoothing. Repaint entire side of truck and likely roof and rear bumper. Before and after pictures to follow.

This sucks.

Aw, that does suck! 8K. Wow. From other accident pics I've seen, the front & rear of the RL hold up extremely well... it would be educational to see how the side faired.

I don't think I could drive in NY at all... I'm used to the open desert. I would be so stressed out!

I hope your truck makes a full recovery!

Re: That Sickening Sound

I'm very sorry to hear that, BillB. No injuries, that's good. Accidents happen, don't beat yourself up over it. It's hard not to, I know. I caused $800 damage to mine when it was only 4 months old and I was weak in the knees each time I looked at it until it went into the shop. Yours is so much worse, I can imagine how you feel.

I hope your body shop repairs it to your satisfaction.

Re: That Sickening Sound

Did you consider leaving the keys in it and putting a prepaid gas card on the dash and then calling your insurance company?

I got depressed just reading about it. Sorry BillB.

I certainly did consider this and in the middle of NYC you don't even need the gas card to lose a vehicle. My luck is they would drive it into the ground for a week and then the cops would find it and I would have a useless RL with $8000 of body work.
