Whistling noise when backing up.

Just started doing that today, every time I back up a whistling/squealing noise can be heard from the back, mostly coming from the passenger side. I have about 8k miles on the RL. Any Idea what it is before I take it in for service?

for the whistle....This may sound like a weird question, but is the stereo on at that point?
for the squeal... it almost sounds like a brake is not releasing 100%

I turn the stereo off so i can hear it better, I am leaning towards the brake no releasing as well. I made sure the E brake is released, I never used it anyways. Going to call the dealer to make an appointment today.

Re: Whistling noise when backing up.

I figured the whistle was because your truck was just happy! But then the squeal???
I agree with k757 - brakes! Let us know what you find out.

Re: Whistling noise when backing up.

Now if its the brakes, Would it be covered under the warranty? the RL has less than 8k miles, the dealer wants to charge me $99 diagnostic fee to find out if it would be covered under the warranty or not. If it is they said they waive that fee. Does that sound right?

Re: Whistling noise when backing up.

With only 8K miles, whatever is causing the sounds should be under warranty. I would not pay anything! Is there another Honda dealer you could try?

Re: Whistling noise when backing up.

if its a squeal, it may just be the dust shield around the rear brake disc(its thin metal so it can sometimes deform from the heat/cold cycle)or it could just be a pig stuck in your wheelwell, that happens from time to time(do you live on a farm by chance?)

if its a whistle, I have a question for you first: do you have an amplifier installed in your custom stereo?

Re: Whistling noise when backing up.

Dont live on a farm, and no amp. The noise started as a whistle like sound and now its starting to squeal worse, have a service appointment tomorrow morning at a different dealer who said there will be no charge to diagnose since the RL still under 8k miles. will let you guys know.

Re: Whistling noise when backing up.

On my Blazer I was told to use the parking brake as much as possible. Even if not needed. Like when you park in a flat parking lot. If you never use your parking brake then the cables and the brake assembly will likely rust and you will not be able to use them when you really need to. Also a frozen parking brake assembly can cause the parking brake to not release if it is dragging.

You said it was squealing when you back up. Don't the brakes auto adjust when you are backing up like on other vehicles? If so maybe you are low on pad material. Or you just have really dirty brakes.
