Thieves Follow Market Trends
Thieves still prefer cars over SUVs or pickups—although large SUVs are becoming more common on the lists. In two separate studies, one from CCC and the other from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), at least seven of the ten most commonly stolen vehicles in the United States are cars, with the Acura Integra, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic and Honda Accord prominent on the lists. However both studies show an increase in SUV theft.
The SUVs with the highest theft rates, according to the CCC 2004 stolen vehicle report, are the 2004 Cadillac Escalade and the 1998 Land Rover Range Rover.
The most commonly stolen truck, according to the NICB report, is the Chevrolet Silverado (C/K) full-size pickup—fifth on the NICB list for calendar 2004.
According to Bryant, "Vehicle thieves follow market trends and target the most popular vehicles because they provide the best market for stolen vehicle parts and illegal export to other countries."

The CCC reports the ten most stolen vehicles for 2004 are as follows:
  1. 1999 Acura Integra
  2. 2002 BMW M Roadster
  3. 1998 Acura Integra
  4. 1991 GMC V2500
  5. 2002 Audi S4
  6. 1996 Acura Integra
  7. 1995 Acura Integra
  8. 2004 Mercury Marauder
  9. 1997 Acura Integra
  10. 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600
The study is based on total loss claims received from more than 350 property and casualty insurers in North America and compares the number of vehicles stolen and not recovered against vehicle registration volume information provided by R.L. Polk & Co., to determine the rate of theft.

The NICB top ten list—the number in parentheses is the model year most stolen:
  1. Honda Civic (1995)
  2. Toyota Camry (1989)
  3. Honda Accord (1991)
  4. Dodge Caravan (1994)
  5. Chevrolet C/K 1500 (1994)
  6. Ford F-150 (1997)
  7. Dodge Ram Pickup (2003)
  8. Acura Integra (1990)
  9. Toyota Pickup (1988)
  10. Nissan Sentra (1991)
The HLDI lists the five most stolen vehicles for the 2001-2003 model years as follows:
  1. Cadillac Escalade EXT
  2. Nissan Maxima
  3. Cadillac Escalade
  4. Dodge Stratus/Chrysler Sebring
  5. Dodge Intrepid

Re: America's Most Stolen Vehicles

Once again statistics seem to say anything. It actually is a credit to the brand to be the "most stolen". There are probably more civics still on the road then any other car of a similar age. Civics don't tend to die they just get passed to another generation. It would be very intersting to see how many 15 year old Honda's are still on the road compared to 15 year old...cavaliers or some such vehicle.

Not sure this would be fair to Chevy as my mother keeps buying cavaliers and killing them. If she bought Civics she would do the same. And Escorts were very reliable cars as are the Focus to some extent. In the small car category, if you treat your car fairly, I think almost any one of them will last a long time. It is just which ones would you still be willing to look at after that time? Old Honda cars tend to look pretty bad, the paint didn't hold up well in a lot of them, at least in the NE, and they also rusted more than the current ones do. I saw an old early 1990s style Escort Wagon, and the thing looked brand new, right behind it was an early 1990s Accord that had holes in the paint and the panels were rusting. The Accord sounded better though.

Re: America's Most Stolen Vehicles

Thats interesting...I wonder if our Canadian Honda's get more rust proofing? I know there are a few differences. A mechanic friend of mine who use to work with Honda told me that tuning/ suspension settings / base tires are often different...So maybe the Rust treatment/ paint too? We have a whole lot of pre 1990 civics running aorund up here with nary a mark on them... or maybe I just notice them more then other vehicles

Re: America's Most Stolen Vehicles

Interesting, I used to own a 1992 Acura Integra (same generation as the 1990 listed). The interesting point about this article is that NONE of the Honda/Acura vehicles on this list had the immobilizer system in them. The immobilizer system was added to the Integra in 2000. Looks like the immobilzer system is doing what it's supposed to!
