Which is the most waterproof hard tonneau cover?

I can't believe I just spent ~3 hours going through the forums seeking this answer. I've been able to "narrow" it down to the Extang, Backflip, Retrax, Rollbak, and even the OEM but none seems close to a perfect solution.

I understand mounting may be difficult, but as a former Ford Explorer Sport Trac owner, for the ~$1k I dropped on the original factory tonneau, I got a decade of near waterproof, "perceived" security (guess a screwdriver could pop open the locks), and great looks. Am I to understand that after 5 years, Honda still can't get it right? Really? My only complaint about the ST tonneau was how solidly it was built, bit of a challenge to remove the heavy top and store it away from the vehicle.

Requirements:
- Hard top
- Multiple points of access (ie folding/rolling)
- Nearly waterproof
- Works with bed extender
- Removable by 1 person

I'm awaiting delivery of a '11 RTL w/ navi and as much I've dumped into this truck, spending up to $1,500 for some peace of mind is well worth it.

(Be gentle)

Here's a test I did on my Extang..I have nothing to compare it with, but quite pleased with it all around.

Not a bad test and I like your comments about a bed mat (I had one in my ST as well) ... mental note: get bed mat! However, that's a lot of water for just 1 minute, how much would you expect in a downpour that last several hours?

... is the trunk waterproof (taking into consideration a bed mat is added)?

Re: Which is the most waterproof hard tonneau cover?

No doubt it will get more water with a constant rain, however it always running off. I did not try to move it around and make sure it was sealing better, especially where it meets the back of the cab. Some have added various rubber strips and sealing compounds on various tonneau covers to improve it.
I live in an area with not a lot of rainfall, so it was not a major issue for me..especially with a mat where a lot of draining will be underneath it. I guess when the rains come I will really find out. I have not tried a car wash yet either, but would expect results to be similar to the hose test.

Yes, the mat is essential. No problems with the trunk, it is sealed when closed.

By the way, be aware most covers limit the trunk opening somewhat.
Here's the measurement for the Trifecta

The Torza has some notches in the rails which allow a little more access. Unless you get the factory top, or another tilt-back cover, there will always be some restriction, but it never seems to be enough to be a real problem.

The retractable covers are likely the most waterproof. Unfortunately, the Ridgeline design does not lend itself to a sealing hard cap such as you see on other pickups.

Re: Which is the most waterproof hard tonneau cover?

I bought the new Backflip HD expecting it to leak some water, but it is dry. even when I wash the truck it is dry. without the drain tubes. the only time it leaked some water is when I parked it on a steep hill nose down for several days and it rained, but that is what the drain tubes are for. the only disadvantage I can see is that being hard aluminum it will dent, though my has not done so yet. paid $800.

Wow, that's a bit of a shock - does this limitation affect the OEM model as well? (which would be really surprising if they let that slip)

Good stuff, glad to see some people are having really good experiences with their choice of cover.

Again, only the tiltbacks like the OEM (where the back half tilts) do not have a restriction. For other covers, where there is a side rail there is a restriction.
No one has found the restriction to be a problem.

Thanks for that clarification.

Re: Which is the most waterproof hard tonneau cover?

Altamount brought up a good point about parking on grades. That could certainly have major effect on how much water gets in and stays in.
Parking nose up when it is raining would certainly help!
I see I will have more opportunities for experiments in the future! Retirement does have some advantages! LOL

BTW, I only noticed today you were asking about 'hard covers'...hopefully the topic will still interest all owners with covers to take some pics!!
