Making noise when wheels are turned

My 06 has started making a humming type noise that almost sounds like the power steering is going bad when the wheels are turned either left or right and only makes the noise when i give it gas. the more the wheels are turned the louder it gets. I do believe it has something to do with the rear / limited slip but i'm not sure. Has anyone come across this yet?

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

How long since your VTM-4 fluid was changed? How many miles on your 2006 RL?

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

It's been covered, and yes, you need a fresh load of VTM-4.

Lots of threads explain the problem. Fix is cheap and not too hard to DIY.

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

In 100k miles, the VTM-4 fluid has never been changed?

Jeepers. What maintenance *has* been done on your RL? Did you buy it new?

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

Yes i bought it new. I have changed the brakes and tires and the oil has been changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. It runs great. It is now obvious that the VTM oil should have been changed.

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

Good luck to you. I hope your rear diff is ok.

But you really need to take a look at the mx schedules for what should have been/needs to be done. It sounds like you have ignored the MM system. (which is ok, but you should have been following the mx schedule if so).

I trust you know that you have a major maintenance interval coming up at 105k when the water pump, timing belt, spark plugs, idler pulley, etc. need to be changed.

How about the tranny fluid? Transfer assembly gear oil? Air and cabin filters? Brake fluid flush?

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

I am planning my timing belt at this time. i'm trying to find a reasonable yet competent mechanic to do it. I've worked on cars my whole life but it's not very often that one changes the transfer case oil if at all. It didn't dawn on me about being front wheel drive and it's always engaged. Not much i can do except change oils now.

Could you please clarify mx schedules? is that a reference to maintenance?

what is the MM system?

tranny fluid has not been touched. I was going to add some Lucas to it. I've seen too many trannies with high miles get ruined by changing the fluid.

Transfer assembly gear oil has not been changed

Air and cabin filters have not been changed

Brake fluid flush has not been done. Is this one even necessary?

I know how to work on cars but these terms are new to me.
I know, i should have been on this sooner.

thanks for all the help guys

Re: Making noise when wheels are turned

No offense intended, but assuming you're serious and not jerking my chain, it's time for you to do some reading:

Normal and severe maintenance schedules

Crush washers and torques

What not to have done to your Honda

Maintenance minder basics

A136 maintenance thread

Cabin filter replacement

One way to change VTM-4 fluid. Personally, I use a hand pump that fits the gallon jug.

MM reset procedure

Suggestions:
use a good quality oil filter... not the Honda A02 filter. Use the Honda A01 or Napa Gold/Wix/Purolator equivalent.

Use Honda fluids for all fluid changes except for hypoid gear oil for the transfer assembly and motor oil (but stick with 5w-20 SAE).

VTM-4 fluid does *not* like to be contaminated. Make sure the equipment you use to change it is clean of any residue of any other fluids. I dedicate pumps and tubing for this process and don't use it with anything else.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic. Change it every 3 years to get rid of any contaminants and water it may contain.

Let us know if you have any questions or problems.

Edit: I strongly recommend against adding any additives to the oil or transmission fluids. Do a search here on additives for more info if interested in why.
