I nearly made a bonehead mistake....

On Wednesday I'm driving a a diesel powered vehicle with a maximum weight trailer attached in very hot conditions. I need fuel bad and the first truck stop had a long waiting line. I go to the second and see a free pump.... looked great.

Someone was following me in my Ridgeline. My mind was on my Ridgeline, not the diesel truck I was driving.

The pump I was using had three grades of gasoline and one grade of diesel fuel. Guess which I selected? That's right... mid grade gasoline.

After about 5 seconds I realize my mistake!! I realize I'm pumping gasoline into a diesel powered vehicle while adoring my Ridgeline. I quickly try and stop the gasoline pump and discover it hasn't started yet. The pump is flashing for me to enter my Zip Code.

Whew... I would have never lived down that error. All turned out fine. No gasoline was actually pumped. The request for Zip Code saved me from my own error.

Re: I nearly made a bonehead mistake....

Close call. If you would have only pumped about 5 seconds worth of gasoline and had a good delusion rate it probably wouldn't have done any harm.

Saved by a zip code, now thats good.

I've been zapped by the zip code before too. Except I was pumping in the correct fuel.

I set the pump went into the store to buy a soda. When I returned I figured the pump would almost be over only to see it never started.

Re: I nearly made a bonehead mistake....

Mmm, I remember years ago, It may have been in a different country, I do not remember, but I was in a similar situation and I did not let me do it because, the part that goes in to the tank would not fit, either the hole in the diesel car was too small for the gas to go in or the other way around.

It's news to me that mistake is even possible since It did not let me make it when I was in that situation.

I pumped diesel into a gas car once in Curacao. Didn't make it off of the gas station to the road. I pay attention what I'm pumping now.

Re: I nearly made a bonehead mistake....

I believe that a diesel engine will tolerate gasoline (some) whereas a gas engine will not tolerate diesel fuel. So I doubt that 5 seconds of gas (had it actually pumped) would have caused a problem.

Still... stuff happens and it's good to know that you were saved by the zip code safety protocol.

Glad to know you still like to admire your RL too!

I sort of beg to differ, our 2007 Dodge Caravan(work van) was running low on gas so the front desk person went to the gas station and filled it with diesel, it ran for about a day and a half, I came to work on Monday and asked why there was so much smoke coming from the tailpipe, I found out about the diesel fuel took the vehicle to the dealer who pumped out the tank, cleaned the fuel rail etc. and returned it to us, at 190,000 it's still running well.

Re: I nearly made a bonehead mistake....

Very interesting. I thought that a gas engine would puke on diesel fuel.

The nozzle on a diesel pump is much larger than its gasoline counterpart. A diesel nozzle won't fit in a gasoline filler tube, but a gasoline nozzle will fit in a diesel filler tube.
