pulling a tree stump

Did some digging around a small but mighty tree stump. Cut a few roots with the chainsaw, and hooked up the Ridge. Put er' in 2nd gear, engaged all wheels and bingo, pulled that stump right out of the ground. I must admit it took a few tries, but it finally came out.

You also should have put it in 1st gear not second. the VTM-4 will prevent it from spinning tires, and you would have gotten it out muuch easier than in second gear.

Its an automatic, it will always start in 1st gear regardless of the shift setting. Once up to speed and shifts to second it will hold, but I doubt there was enough speed to get to second in this case.

Re: pulling a tree stump

No, If you shift it to D or D3, it will shift through the gears up until 5th or 3rd, respectively. If you shift it to 2 or 1, it will start, and stay in 2nd or 1st, respectively. These gears are used for: 1st- pulling things, slow off-roading, because you dont want it to shift up, and lose torque and momentum; 2nd- use for situations when you don't need torque, but dont want wheel-spin. (which VTM-4 prevents wheel spin.)

Re: pulling a tree stump

Actually, I did uses 1st gear. The first time I tried it, I used 2nd gear, but 1st gear there after. Also, I engaged the VTM manually. I could take a picture of the stump, I still have it..........

You are partially correct, however again regardless of the shift position the transmision will start in 1st if standing still. If in second and again not moving it will start in 1st then shift to second and hold that gear.

Sorry, Doctor J, but you are incorrect. Check your owners manual for verification. D2 locks the transmission in second gear. It does not start in 1st gear.

Re: pulling a tree stump

Sounds like an easy way to damage the transmission.
