18x8 +38 offset BMW wheel on Ridgeline

I just got my wheels 18x8 +38 offset BMW wheels and I went to the tire shop to install them. The tire shop did not install them because the space between the caliper and the wheel is about one millimeter (you can put a Visa card between it).
I called the wheel shop I bought this wheel from (bestwheels.com) and they told me that is just fine.
They have the same wheel in +35 offset what would bring the wheel more away from the caliper but he told me it would be not good for this heavy truck to move the wheel more away from the caliper.
Does anyone have the same clearance between caliper and wheel with problems ??

I would be afraid that after a couple of stops that the caliper would expand with the heat generated from the friction of the pads against the rotor and start to rub against the rim.

It isn't out of the question that the rim might have a little flex to it and rub aggressively against the caliper during a high speed collision avoidance maneuver and act as a brake which might put you into an unexpected spin.

in racing people always seem to be having caliper clearance issues, usually a couple of minutes with a dremmel is enough to fix it a more elegant solution is a block sander, dont worrry the calper will not be affected by this as long as its minor

So you agree as long there is clearance between the cliper and the wheel it will work ?

Sky, I'll have to side with Chris on this one. 1 mm is too close for comfort on our streets where you'll find all kinds of crap that's begging to jam itself in between there. On the race track under ideal conditions, things may be a bit different....

Keep in mind that the stock wheel offset is 45mm.

Also, a 35mm offset wheel may solve your clearance issues but will definitely stick well outside of your wheel well compromising your truck's handling capabilities and suspension geometry. Let's not forget tire dressing all over the side of your truck....

Andy,

I was wondering why a 38 offset could be so close to the Ridgeline brake calliper. I thought if I use any wheel between 35-45 offset it would fit on the Ridgeline ?? If I use the same 18" wheel with a say 40 offset it would hit the calliper for sure. I love the wheel but I better sell it.

The wheel hub and adjoining spoke or center-piece design is different on each and every wheel. One particular model of wheel with a 38 mm offset may fit with plenty of room to spare whereas another model or brand with an identical offset may not.

In addition, Honda's brake caliper tends to stick out a tad more than conventional brake calipers thus reducing any further clearance. It's sort of like women's shoes (as I'm told) which come in various sizes and widths within any given size. Basically, you have to test fit any aftermarket wheel onto your vehicle prior to purchasing a complete set.
