Re: Goodyear tires for the RL

I have my gas consumption/mileage charted in this thread:

Gas Mileage: My Numbers

The April update of the chart is due. I have actually experienced an increase in mileage since about the time I put these on. However, I do not necessarily think the tires had any affect. The trend shown in the chart has bottomed and my mileage is up to about "normal" or 17mpg.

Interesting note: my Goodyear dealer put way too much air in them originally and argued with me about it (55 psi). I called Goodyear tech support to confirm that they should be treated like any other tire and be based on gross weight per wheel. Works out for the Ridge to be 35 psi. Much better, not squirrelly, rock solid in turns and actually quieter!

So I would say that there has been no decrease in mileage.

Re: Goodyear tires for the RL

That is good news. Nice chart too. Very insightful. Eases my worries somewhat about installing my lift that has been sitting in the garage. I really dont go offroad that much anymore since I live in Houston now, but would like a tire that can handle the south Texas thorn bushes like mesquite and huisach and the occasional black gumbo mud (slick but not deep) or sand. I am concerned about the ride with a load range E tire though. I had BFG A/T "D"s on my avalanche, and it was markedly rougher than when it had the factory 4 ply tires on it. But I could drive over just about anything with no worries. I just wonder if this tire in standard load range (I assume a 4 ply) would be tough enough. I was looking at the 255/70/17 size on TireRack.

Re: Goodyear tires for the RL

The 10 ply is rougher over sharp bumps/jolts. For my specific needs, it is probably worth the trade. On smooth level surface the ride is the same. Protection from punctures (nails, wire, flint rock or locust thorns) and also sidewall impacts (stream crossings, stone walls, tall curbs) is a driving concern for me. Certainly not for everyone! (Really, not for hardly anyone on this forum)
I might add that I have Nitto Terra Grapplers on the Silverado and they are an outstanding combination of ride and toughness. They were not in the appropriate size for my usage on the Ridge. Had they been, I would have purchased those.

Geotech you're way too consistant for me. LOL I can barely remember to see what my mileage was much less log everything the way you have.

I will say one thing about tire. YOKOHAMA makes a great tire for a very good price. I have alway enjoyed their performance for dollar they offer. It started with some AVS Intermediates on my Accord, then Paradas on my Prelude, lastly geolanders on a 4Runner before we bought the MDX. I also have a set of Advan A032R ready to be installed on the Accord when it's ready for SCCA and NASA club racing. Yoko's have treated me very well and I will only purchase them in the future.

Michelins= overpriced and under performing. INHO

First, this is a business vehicle and the records just come with the territory. We always log, but creating speadsheets over mileage is another example of how special the Ridge is to me. HiPSI supplied the necessary encouragement.

Second, I've heard lots of good things about Yokohamas. Even had a set on one of our trucks a few years back. They performed well then, as I recall.

Third, I used to think the same about Michelins, untill experiencing the stock LTX's. They were an excellent tire for general hard surface driving. A little pricey but they were a pleasant surprise. I won't again reiterate my specific tire needs. The LTX'S were not really an option.

I have three clients in our small community that are also tire dealers. I buy locally and that creates a small challange in finding the best value in tires.

Re: Goodyear tires for the RL

Yes I will admit I am pleased with the LTXs but they're too pricey for my drving habbits.

Re: Goodyear tires for the RL

I installed a set of Yokohama Advan ST 255/60-17 tires, a bit shorter and wider than the OE size, 2340# XL load rating. These are a high performance summer street tire made specifically for trucks. I rarely go off the pavement and am more concerned with dry and wet street handling performance. My Ridge rides nice towing or cruising, flys through the turns/ramps.
