Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

Do you guys think it could have something to do with the TPS being installed on wheels that aren't really meant to have them? I would like to hear some input from someone who has eliminated the TPS altogether.

I don't think so simply because the weight of the TPS sensor would be countered during the balance procedure.

I've also eliminated any suspension or steering issues because the problem goes away when I switch back to the stock rims/tires during the winter.

true, but maybe just the sheer mass and size of the module.... I can't think of any other reason. I thought the shop that put my wheels on just did a ****ty job balancing them.

The Ridgline is rejecting them. It doesn't want to be a "RiceRidge"
RiceRidge? It is a Japanese vehicle

I am going to live with it, as long as its not hurting the truck. But a solution would be superior!

Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

I was talking about this problem to my neighbor and I think he might have it figured out. He looked at my tires and commented that they were wide and the profile is very square vs the more rounded shape of the stockers. After time, many roads develop subtle grooves from car tires. Because of the width, square shape, and relatively stiff construction of the performance tires, mine might not "fit" down in the grooves as well and I'm actually riding more on the edges of the tires. To test this, he suggested getting out of the "groove" the next time it happened.

I've been testing his theory and I think there is something to it. When I start to get a shimmy, I'll move left or right and I seem to have an improvement. I also notice that when my truck is full (either with a load or with my family), it's much smoother. Perhaps the additional weight pushes it down in the "groove" more so it rides on the center of the tire.

He said he ran into this all the time when he used to have a Camaro with big, wide, performance tires. He asked if I feel the truck getting pulled around sometimes, which I admitted it does. I had thought that was caused by the changed in rim offset but he said the wider tire can cause that effect as well.

The next thing I'm going to try is playing with air pressure. I've been running 35 psi. I think I'll try lowering it to 30 and see how it goes.

You guys make a good case for retaining the stock wheels.

Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

A friend of mine purchased some nice looking 19" wheels for his vehicle... At high speeds he would encounter a similiar issue. After tons of research he found that the rims can not be balanced... It had something to do with unsprung weight. He found people with the same wheel and they had the same problem... it appears that it was the type of wheel. The wheel has since been discontinued...

I wish you all affected by this issue, the best...

Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

Funny thing is that I am running STOCK TIRES on just aftermarket 17's so that at least invalidates part of the argument.
