I looked at the tires closely and could see cupping on the edges. I also noticed that the tire listed the max payload at 50 PSI. I had thought I was riding on the edges of the tires due to the grooves in the road but perhaps what was really just because of under inflation. I increased the pressure to 45 PSI and the problem has almost completely gone away. In fact, when I notice it now, it's hard to tell if it's the vibration / shimmy problem or just an all around section of rougher road.

For those of you with this problem, play with your air pressure. I was amazed at the difference it made.

On a related note, 45 PSI is as high as I've gone so far. Since the tires say the max is 50 PSI, is that where I should be running? I've always thought that the max pressure was just that, a max. For normal driving, it should be somewhat less. What do you think?
If you have cupping then you need an alignment, pure and simple...trust me.

Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

On my 20's I am running 41 psi cold. It gives me a good firm ride and no balancing issues through the mph's. I do have to admit many aftermarket companies who balance your rims/tires and then ship them to you do a crappy job. I have had to get two set rebalanced after installing them on different vehicles.

Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

it's a common problem with aftermarket wheel to cause vibration at high speed usually above 60 MPH. even with the wheel spacer rings still won't solve the problems completely. bottom line is you putting some wheel on that are not design for your truck it's won't be perfect.

If you have cupping your toe is out of alignment..I recommend you get alignment checked.

Re: New 20" wheels having a balance problem.

I've had the truck aligned several times. Each time, it wasn't out very much (aside from when the lift was initially installed). The cupping was very minor and now that I've increased the pressure and rotated the tires, the wear is very even and I haven't noticed the vibration as much.

Off course, I've been running my stockers since Nov. for the winter. I'll put my 20's on in a couple of months and see how it goes.
