I never thought over tightening would cause a problem. I always thought if they were not tight enought a shimmy could occur. A long time ago, we used to just use a T bar and just made them super tight. Heh heh... Now that I think about it, I probably was tightening them way over 100 ft/lbs. I was lucky that I never stripped anything. But those were also on the old cars with steel rims. I currently have two clicker 1/2" torque wrenches. I tried comparing the two and they seem to click around the same tightness. I have them set at 90 ft/lbs. I really want one of those new digital torque wrenches. They look pretty cool, but are pricey. Thanks.

Re: Steering wheel shaking with larger rims

Are you using metal or plastic hubcentric rings and how tight are they?

Re: Steering wheel shaking with larger rims

The rims came with platic rings. Do they make metal ones? I was kinda surprised to see plastic. The rings are snug when placed in the rim and sometimes get stuck to the hub when taking them off the truck. I wonder if the plastic might flex a little with heat and also with the movement of such a heavy rim. The rings are thin. Although you would think carefully tightening 5 lug nuts would help keep them centered. If they make metal ones, I wouldn't mind trying them. Maybe that would solve the problem. I'll try to call around. Thanks.

I had some knarly wheel shake at 80 until I went from 32psi to 41 psi which is 5 less than max psi on my tires and it's gone now.

Also my enkeis used hub centric rings by my miro ones dont and there has been no change in feeling at the front

Very interesting.... Did your Miro rims have the vibration too, or just the Enkeis? Hopefully other members with aftermarket rims will have input. I'm going to check out if metal hubcentric rings exist and also continue to experiment with tire pressures. Maybe the increase/decrease in pressure somehow smoothes out the vibration of the rim being slightly off centered. Thanks.

Re: Steering wheel shaking with larger rims

If you are thinking about getting metal hubcentric rings get anodized aluminum. (I don't think that stainless steel are available but I'd check none the less.) If you don't use aluminum, the rings will rust the wheels onto the truck. You'll have to take em' off with a sledgehammer if they rust.

Just out of curiosity, are you using the right kind of lug nuts? I had the same problem you had on one of my vehicles for 6 months. I had it in 4 different shops for alignments and wheel balancing and it was the damn lug nuts. Neither I nor anyone in the first 3 shops figured this out.

I'll keep that in mind about the aluminum vs. stainless rings. The lug nuts came with the Zinik rims. The stock lug nuts flare out too much to be reused. They came with plain generic looking acorn style nuts, which seems to fit the rims ok. I also got the Gorilla wheel locks with the acorn end. I don't think the flat type would fit well when I look at the holes. On the other hand, I never actually tried any other type. It would have to be the narrow style lug nuts since there is not much space in the hole. How did you find out it was the lug nuts? Did you try different brands? Thanks for the input.
