Re: Swaping out Steel Wheels on RT need some advise

After calling some local tire/wheel shops I was getting prices in the 80-125 range, However I was more conserend with getting a Shop that Had a
Hunter GPS9700 Road Force machine. After looking at local shops with this machine on the Hunters web site, I saw that a dealer right down the street had one. So i called, He quoted me $15 a wheel to do the swap... To say the least I just got my 07 RT back and the final bill was $60 bucks. I didn't get charge for nuts or stems, just $15 bucks to do a wheel swap. I'll post some pics later. Well that was painless and cheap...

New Silver painted RTS Wheels on ebay. total 247
Dealer Wheel swap. Total 60.
= 307 for my wheel upgrade.

Wow, $15 for swapping, balance, stems and "new" lug nuts! Are you sure they didn't just reuse your old ones off the steel rims? Just because you went to the dealer, doesn't mean they knew what they were doing.
Just my 2 cents.

You couldn't be more right, When ROC members tell you they need new Lugs... They need new Lugs... I can't believe it... On my way home from work, about 25 miles, the RL started to shimmy.. I'm thinking what the Heck is going on. So I get home and sure enough some of the Lugs weren't even hand tight. Pull out the Tire Iron and pulled one off, WORNG lugs. Unbelievable, It even states in the Honda Install guide to “Never use steel lugs on Aluminum Wheels”. I'm thinking it came loose because it was the wrong lug, instead of them having me drive my RL out of the shop ,without tighten the lugs. What !!! I have to double check the dealer Now . I guess I'm going to check the oil filter, and drain plug to see if they are tight. I could of lost a wheel or got injured... Kills me or should I say my local dealer is trying to kill me. Oh well back to the dealer….

$60 worth of lugs could have cost you your life. I'm glad you're ok and you didn't wreck your RL.

This is a classic example of what happened to ONDLINKS and I. He converted over to the new '08 machined wheels before I did. His tire people didn't notice the lug nut incompatibility and used the lug nuts from the original alloy wheels. Luckily, my tire guys sent up the red flags and explained why they wouldn't work. I had to buy a set of compatible lug nuts just to get home.

The next working day I ordered the correct Honda Lug Nuts from our local dealership.

BTW, I'm glad there were no serious mishaps for you, godgib.

Well I pulled into the dealer this morning, Gave them a mouth full... Well to say the least I got $60 worth of lugs for free, and was out by 7:50AM. I even spoke to the tech who did the work, becuase I wan't to make sure they at least used a torque stick. He was a Young Kid, but someone in that shop should of known that the lugs didn't fit. I should of gave the shop manager a ear full. Oh Well... No Harm to the RL, it's safe and riding smooooooth.... Still i may have gotten away cheap, but what ordeal....

Re: Swapping out Steel Wheels on RT need some advise

I just bought tire and rims that are the alloy type. I went by a tire shop today to ask about changing the tire sensors from my RT rims to the RTL rims and they mention they might have to reset the sensors and there was a 10% chance they might not be able to reset them. Is this the norm? Has anyone had a problem with this or should I find a another tire shop?

Thanks

Not sure if I understand the question correctly? If you’re using the same sensors as you bought originally with the truck and are only swapping them to new rims, why would they have to reset them? Me thinks there’s a 90% chance they are trying to sell you new sensors!

Just thought of this, there might be the chance that Honda has different sensors for steel & alloy wheels (difference in the thickness of the wheels). If this is the case then you might have to buy a set of sensors for alloy wheels. I’m sure someone who has done this mod will let you know.

I want to say that is the case, but don't quote me on that.
