BFG 255/75/17 Going On Sunday..

..How screwed am I? Mounting after I have the lift on that day.

It seems they are a little taller (32") then most here have installed with their Truxxx lift, but they are also quite a bit narrower.

Pinch weld and mud flap mod is cake work for me, but what else might I encounter along the way? Its not my truck, so its not here to look at right now.. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row, so to speak.

Thanks

Re: BFG 255/75/17 Going On Sunday..

The main concern for the extra tire height is the spring base that sits just above the tire. Be very careful of that clearance. The lift is a real pain in the butt for the rear tires, but the front is cake. You will probably need to completely grind off the pinch weld and replace it with a flat plate welded across that area. I ground down about half and inch (past the factory spot welds) but it is still not enough for my 285/60/18s when I get on a slope. I am thinking of grinding them completely off and then using the plate to keep the stiffness. Plus I am looking for an excuse to try out my new MIG :-)

You might have to completely lose the mudflaps. If he can live without them that is the easiest bet. Some nerf bars or sidesteps would help to reduce mud and road grime slinging all over the side of the truck.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you have any up close shots of the front and rear "trouble" areas you can post for me?

Re: BFG 255/75/17 Going On Sunday..

Hey chris, please post some pics I'm curious to see how they fit. I put a truxxx lift on last month and wanna get BFGs. This forum has been a tremendous help. I didnt really hava problem with the lift... the rear strut had to be turned 180 at the top. Also found a split RF boot. I ordered one... its on backorder. I found it in miami no problem. I found that replacing the boot wouldve been easier without the lift spacers in there... I had to take the strut off again. I should say I did the job at my friends shop witha full blown lift etc.... It'd be a tuff job layin on the ground with hand tools .....

Re: BFG 255/75/17 Going On Sunday..

A freind and I did my lift with two el cheapo 2-ton jacks. A lift would have been the best thing ever.

I did not take many pictures of the rear install because I was so fed up with the whole process by that time. Here are a couple pics of the rear instal and one of the pinch weld in the front.

Also, make sure you do not allow the axles to hang down unsupported. I did not know that and I have had to get both of my front boots fixed for leaks. They still covered it under warranty, but it is an easy thing to avoid if you know to do so.
