Talking Re: K&N drop in air filter for 2007 RL

Great thread to read prior to going to sleep tonite.

Not that it matters as I think not many people will read this thread anymore, but since I am new, and I pickup my 07 RTL tomorrow, I will offer my facts.

I own a 1998 Ford SVT Contour that has an engine that revs to ~ 6750 RPM or so.

I rev that engine repeatedly on a daily basis, and I do mean repeatedly, to that redline/fuel shut off. I beat on the car as I drive fast all the time.

This car has run 112550 very hard miles and of those miles, ~102000 miles have been with the K&N cone drop in replacement air filter. It was cleaned after 50,000 miles.

I have never had a MAF sensor fail.

I won't say that I saw any noticable performance gain, or even mileage gain.

I bought it because I am a cheap man. $60 for a filter and $10 for the cleaning kit vs. $15-20 per paper filter that needs to be changed more regularly. Financially it made sense, and it certainly hasn't cost me any repairs. I am now convinced that I didn't clean it often enough and my engine struglled to suck air in and burned more fuel as a result. Oh well, the sticker looked bad arse on my back window...

I have noticed the oily residue in my intake as well. These are the facts of my test, and they are undisputed (A Few Good Men reference there....need at least one a day)

Yeah, and I once had fuzzy dice on the mirror of my '51 Chevy. What a dog!

Anyhoo, I fail to understand why any aftermarket intake device would have any effect at less than WOT. At less than full throttle the main restriction on airflow is the throttle plate. The ECU compensates as needed for design performance.
