A quick mod for the cold air intake

After installing my K&N air filter in the stock airbox, I was looking for ways to get more air into the intake a little faster. I noticed that the air picks up thru this little plastic grill above the radiator and noted the size of the screen that was built into the cover. This screen exists to keep leaves and small rodents from gaining access to the air intake. I decided to find out how much one of these covers is from honda (about $25.00! ) and grab one for modding. After putting a cutting wheel on the dremel, I cut out the big, fat screen mesh and let the cool air flow!.At 30mph and up, it should make a difference..slight, but basically free.

I kept the stock one for warrenty issues that may pop up down the road...paranoid!.

I will take a shot today, but for now just imagine cutting along the RED LINE in the photo (but much straighter!).

Re: A quick mod for the cold air intake

Thr main reason is to use the stock set up, as it is the only true cold air intake, all I did was install a K&N element. I am working out a way to add more cold air....gimmie time!.

Unless I'm missing something, the air intake is totally contained within the 'scoop' and that area that you've cut out doesn't come into the equation at all. The grill that you've modified is for clearing away hot air rising from the radiator.

Re: A quick mod for the cold air intake

I agree with lingered, you just cut down on the ability of the radiator to do its job. That shroud is to push air thru the radiator, now it can bypass it and not cool the engine as well, thus REDUCING performance. A cooler motor, to a point, is a better perfoming motor.

Cold air passes through the front grill and goes up the "modified grills" and gets into the scoop. Therefore, at list theoretically, opening up that area can increase some performance. The questions are how much and how safe to leave it open, though.
