Re: Oil Filters?

Ur kiddin', right? Look at some of the various brands of oil on the store shelves. Some even say they meet Honda requirements. Problems with Honda/Acura have been with their miserable trannys and lousy dealer service, which are well documented on various sites. My Acura dealer has been the worst I've ever experienced, destroying my perfectly good 30K mile engine on a warranty water pump replacement, not telling me about it for DAYS, and telling me some things that were, let me just say, not true. If you want to go to the expense of buying your oil and filters at Honda go for it but be advised that you're just increasing your cost per mile and maintenance expense. But you do get "free" coffee while a non-certified "technician" works on your car/truck (are you sure he's even changing the oil?). But that's another volumn.

If you were correct - the internet would be full of stories of angry people that had service done by Jiffy Lube, independents, etc. denied warranty claims.

Imagine if you live in a rural area, far away from any dealer. Does Honda (or any reasonable manufacturer) expect you to drive a long distance to the dealer for an oil change? No.

With the cost of gasoline these days - I see little reason to drive across town for an oil change. I live 20+ miles from my Honda dealer. I will not spend an extra $7 in gasoline for the 40+ mile round tip for an oil change. If you think about it - it's wasteful to the environment to do so.

Why not use non-Honda oil, my dealer is happy to change my oil to Mobil 1 5W-20, under their synthetic oil change for $74.95 , even sent me a 10% off coupon.

I think I'll do it myself, (like I've always done) and pocket the cash to spend on the overpriced Mobil M1-110 oil filters. Hey but like I posted earlier only costing me $70 extra over 10 years.

There is no requirement that you use Honda brand oil or filter. As a matter of fact federal law specifically protects you when you use non-OEM products that meet or exceed OEM specifications. It's called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

I doubt that 5% of Honda dealers use Honda brand oil. Most dealers buy bulk oil... usually the cheapest they can find.

Re: Oil Filters?

I had one oil change at my Honda dealer. According to the service bill - they used Castrol oil, not Honda oil. They did use a Honda filter.

I change the oil myself now. Mobil1, bought at Sams Club. And a PureOne filter.

Re: Oil Filters?

Mobile One and Pure 1.

I had an interesting thing happen to me when I changed the oil the first time. When I loosened the OEM filter, it poped and sprayed oil everywhere. Deffinately some built up pressure in the can. Deffinately.

1.The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))
This federal law regulates warranties for the protection of consumers. The essence of the law concerning aftermarket auto parts is that a vehicle manufacturer may not condition a written or implied warranty on the consumers using parts or services which are identified by brand, trade, or corporate name (such as the vehicle maker's brand) unless the parts or service are provided free of charge. The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty. Further, consumers are advised to be aware of any specific terms or conditions stated in the warranty which may result in its being voided. The law states in relevant part:
No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumers using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name... (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)).

So using a different filter brand will not cause a denial of warranty. If this was the case you would have to use Honda everything. Oil, fluids, brake pads, air filters, Etc.
